Hello,
I have a F2-221. I reinitialized the USB drive following this procedure:
viewtopic.php?f=76&t=1455
After that I ended up with Initboot version 4.x
Booting with blank hard disks and using automated install got me TOS 4.2.40. I did a factory reset and on the next boot I manually installed 5.0.176.
This also updated the Initboot version to 5.1.44.
Now I am trying to update to 5.1.24 using the upgrade package from the website, but the update fails.
I am not affected by the issue described in the pinned thread, because the root partition is already 7.5GB:
[user@tos ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md9 7.5G 1.4G 5.7G 20% /
devtmpfs 673M 0 673M 0% /dev
tmpfs 689M 124K 689M 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 689M 18M 671M 3% /tmp
tmpfs 689M 292K 688M 1% /run
tmpfs 689M 5.2M 683M 1% /opt/var
/dev/mapper/vg0-lv0 102G 18M 100G 1% /Volume1
/dev/mapper/vg0-lv0 102G 18M 100G 1% /home
[user@tos ~]#
Even a fresh installation of 5.1.24 or 5.1.37 gets stuck at 90% and fails eventually.

Smart info show that there are many errors at your HDD2. You can confirm with crystaldiskinfo or others hard disk detection tool when you connect you HDD2 to your PC. You can also test your HDD1 to see its health status.

Re: Cannot install TOS 5.1
One of the disks was indeed not in great health, but the installer checked the disk before attempting to install and found both to be in good condition... Strangely I had the same issues without the faulty disk. The other one was ok.
Anyway, today I removed both disks and installed a 2TB WD Red in their place. First attempt hanged while downloading the installation package. The second attempt hanged at 93%. The annoying part was that TOS was partially installed on the disk already and the device kept booting from the broken installation on the disk, instead of from the InitBoot... I had to wipe the disk and finally I got 5.1.40 installed using the default installation method.

Re: Cannot install TOS 5.1
When you start TNAS without any hard drive, it will start from initboot. I hope this can help you.

Re: Cannot install TOS 5.1
I know that. That's why I managed to recover from the broken installation.
A few test results you may find useful:
1. With a single WD Red 2TB TOS 5.1.37 kept hanging during the installation phase (fresh install!). Apparently it was not compatible with (my) F2-221
2. With a single WD Red 2TB TOS 5.1.24 installed successfully, but the performance was pathetic - 25MB/s transferring a single large file over a gigabit network. TRAID & BTRFS
3. TOS 5.1.40 also installed successfully from scratch (upgrade from 5.1.24 also worked fine) and the performance was acceptable - 60-80MB/s. Same HDD, same file, same network. Again TRAID & BTRFS. Apparently there is still room for improvement, because with OpenMediaVault on the same HW, same network and same file I got 100-110MB/s
Anyway, issue solved.
Thanks
