F5-221 crashes / disconnects

Post by Marissa »

Hi all,

I recently received an F5-221 as replacement for the F4-220 I had that broke, but I'm having issues with this one too.

The device seemed to work without issue at first, but after approximately 20-30 minutes the device becomes inaccessible from the network. When it happens, all hard drive lights stop blinking (they usually stay on), the LAN light will keep blinking but slowly. The hard drives stop making a sound but the fan stays on.

When trying to connect to the NAS, it just says "connection timed out". It also does not respond to ping. The only thing that helps is to shut down the NAS by holding the button and restart, but it will happen again after 20-30 minutes.

Nothing specific seems to trigger it, I've had it happen when watching a movie on the network share, but also when doing nothing or when configuring the machine. I've had the issue since we first got it, it hasn't worked normally. I should mention, the hard drives are 4x4TB Seagate Ironwolf in RAID5 and they came from our broken F4-220. I tried updating the TOS to 4.1.27 but it didn't seem to have any effect.

It's similar to this issue: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=537

Should I have reinstalled the drives when migrating? How can I do this without losing my data?

Hi, there is possibility that some files been erased from your system, update does not help for such case. Please try to reinstall the TOS.
please download the installation package from http://dl.terra-master.com/cn/TOS_S2.0_ ... 301431.ins
TOS reinstall will not affect your data.

And follow the instruction to reinstall your OS.

Let me know if that help.

Hi TMRoy, the step says that this will delete the data on my hard drive. Is there a way to do this without deleting my media?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, it just replaces the TOS data, it doesn’t touch any other content you have in your drives.

I believe you but to be sure I'm going to back up my data before doing anything rash.

I'm following the guide from Synology, which works on Terramaster drives too: https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledg ... using_a_PC. So far it works well.

Hi @TMRoy,

I reinstalled the TOS using the method you provided, but the problem isn't solved. The system seems a bit more stable but it's still flaky. I tried copying some files and it stopped after about an hour.

The behaviour has changed. The device now responds to ping, the hard drives make a sound and opening TOS in the browser shows the loading bar:

But otherwise it's not functional. It seems like it responds to network a little bit but not enough to do anything.

Is there something else I can try? Can I enable more detailed logs to see what happens when it stops?

Hi Marissa,
It seems your system does not boot correctly. Is there any damage on your drives? I recommand you to use a new drive to install a fresh system, after that you can plug in your old drives, so that you can find out what is wrong there.

Hi TMRoy,

Thanks for your reply. The drives are new and they should not be damaged. I reinstalled the software again, and checked the RAID volume which seemed to have fixed a few things.

The device has now been up for 12 hours, I'll check tomorrow morning if it stays up through the night. I haven't been able to install Plex yet because of another issue (viewtopic.php?f=51&t=630), I hope that gets resolved quickly so I can get it up and running again.

If I run into issues again I will get another hard drive in the fifth slot and reinstall on there. Is there a guide for this? Is it possible to use an SSD?

@Marissa
SSD is supported. To install a new fresh TOS on your SSD, you need to shutdown your TNAS and pull out all your current drives, then insert the SSD and restall the TOS again. If you have further issues please let us know.

Regarding the plex installation, If the network is busy or many people downloading the same application at the same time, the download progress will be abnormally slow or even no respond. At this time, repeatedly clicking download or update will submit more requests to the server, causing the progress to deteriorate further. If you are experiencing something like this, please try again later.

Thanks TMRoy. Looks like my machine crashed again at night.

I'm going to see if I have any leftover hard drives or SSDs and install the system on there.
