So, the encryption mount/unmount system works fairly well in TOS.
Two questions:
1. What if I want to permanently unencrypt the share? Is there a method to do this? The only recommendation I could find was to move the data from the encrypted share to an unencrypted share. This is not always workable, as the share might be of significant size and the TNAS is fully used.
2. What if the TNAS breaks down or I want to swap the drive and re-use it on another machine? How can I decrypt the share on another machine? There is nothing in the documentation suggesting a way to do this.
Encrypted Shares
Re: Encrypted Shares
You can't turn the encrypted folder into a normal folder, the only way is to move the data out from there.
If the TNAS down, you just need to have another similar TNAS model, plug in your drives, and boot.

Re: Encrypted Shares
I humbly submit that this is yet another feature that renders TNAS a useless machine.
Every single other Operating System out there has some kind of interoperability when it comes to data encryption, so that as long as you have the key, token or passphrase, you are able to decrypt.

Re: Encrypted Shares
I am confused, I really don't know what you want. Of cause, if you have the key, you can decrypt the folder. so what is your question?sanctimon wrote: ↑22 Apr 2023, 01:30 I humbly submit that this is yet another feature that renders TNAS a useless machine.

Re: Encrypted Shares
The question is: how do I decrypt the share on another machine in case I need to swap the drive or the TNAS breaks down?

Unless it's changed recently, TOS uses eCryptFS, which most Linux distributions have or can install.
The encryption key would be able to unlock access for you to transfer the data.
