Memberships

Post by astroashton »

Why are we all of a sudden being told we have to pay for the apps that have been FREE for years? This is a horrible idea. Your software/OS is already pretty basic and glitchy which is most likely why people were using these apps to begin with. Now you're saying because you can't program good software, we should pay YOU MORE money for 3rd party apps that work? This is ridiculous. Don't do this to your customers, please.

Third party developers are free to charge for their releases since they put in the time and resources to port them onto TOS.

If you don't want to pay, then either learn how to port whichever app you'd like to use to TOS 5 using the development guide that's free or install an alternate OS onto your Terra-Master which has whatever apps you suddenly cannot afford and to which you feel you're entitled.

Do they though? These apps weren't created by them, just ported. Are they legally allowed to alter the original apps then resell them for profit?

Could someone at least post a download for ModBase? Even on the store site it says no files are attached. I was in the middle of fixing my server when they decided to do this, so I have half the files

It really depends on their implementation as well as the licencing of the each original program.

There's still time and resources involved in porting, which the party is entitled to recoup, if they so choose; profiting from the sale doesn't seem to be their motivation.

I'm also missing JellyFin for TOS4. They have 2 versions for TOS5. Any way to please make that happen?

You have to understand that using a membership you don't pay for the app itself, you pay to get a support to install these apps on your device. Support which is giving by creating the .tpk files and help during installation/configuration.
Nobody is oblige to use the membership, you can stay on the free version or you când download the source file and port it yourself.
Creating a tpk files is not as easy as you maybe think.
Some involve days and weeks of cross compilation and testing. This is time and resource consuming and I do this only on my spare time. Is not like taking the source file, changing the extension and add it on site for sale.
I think the small amount (price of 2 coffees) of membership for 1 year is a fair price to support the developer (me) and motivate me to continue this work. Belive me there is no profit if I calculate the time and cost of my resources to produce those tpk.
I also kindly ask to respect this work and don't share the update files downloaded from https://tmnascommunity.eu

I completely understand your point. There's no doubt you put a lot of time and effort into this. I was just raising the issue of legality for use of the app, not compensation for your work. I'm simply between a rock and a hard place because this all happened right in the middle of restoring everything. I apologize if I came off as arrogant or entitled. It was simply frustration. That's the only file I'm missing now. The Jellyfish TPK. I just hope you understand where I'm coming from as I do you. This is a matter of timing. It was bad timing. If there's any way you could please help me with that TPK, I'd really appreciate it. The free version has 2 files, but they are both TOS5. I am running TOS4 because I had issues with 5. Anyway, I hope this clears some of the air. Thank you, I do appreciate what you've done.

There is no doubt of legality. Every package have in his description the link to source file, you can go there and create the .tpk package yourself. You don't need to use the membership for support to get the app running on your device.
For reference, i think almost every paid app on the market contains free libraries, that doesn't make illegal to sell their final product (only one example, plex is using ffmpeg and python, free and opensource software)

Jellyfin for TOS4 has been added
