Simple JBOD on Mac

Hi Guys - I hope someone can help me with a simple question please.

I am wanting to bite the bullet and purchase either a D5 Thunderbolt 3 or a D500 / D500c and use as a JBOD enclosure on my imac.

My question is - Do I need to use the Terramaster Software for JBOD or can I just use Disk Utility on my mac to format and go?

I guess my second question is - and please don't take offence - I keep reading about Terramaster reliability and software issues - what are peoples thoughts on this ?

It is recommended that you purchase D5-300C.
