Adding Themes, Plugins, Etc on MyBB Application

Hello, I have installed MyBB through the Application Store and while (so far) it's running great, I would like to work on some themes and I am currently unable to access the installation directory (/usr/local/web-ext/mybb) through anything other than SSH.

Is there a way to enable 'admin' read/write access to this folder or similar?
Towards attempting this, I have done the following

sudo chown -R admin: /usr/local/web-ext/

But this failed to render the results I was aiming for.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I hope I have listed all possible details that could paint you the 'full picture' but please don't be shy on asking for more info and I'll do my best to respond asap.
