Something of note as well after some additional testing: The 10TB drive does come up if I switch it to the 2nd bay, but the 8TB will disappear if moved to the first. Not sure if there's much to gleam from that but.

Thanks for the suggestion with the tape, gave it a go and unfortunately still wasn't able to get it going. it did seem to help with supporting the drive though, so perhaps there is a deeper dive I'd need to do with that.
