[Help] Want help / guidance on configuring for TimeMachine

I'm new to using a NAS, and I'm discovering it's a more complicated and powerful system than I'm used to. I could really use some advice on configuring my system to add a TimeMachine drive for macOS backups.

I have 30 TB total (16,16,10,8 TB drives in TRAID). I have 16TB in the Pool and allocated to Volume 1, using BTRFS. I have a Media folder used for Emby. It also has the user directories in this Volume.

There is 14 TB space unallocated space free.

I want 1 TB for TimeMachine.

  • Do I create a 1TB Volume 2 using BTRFS, create a "Time Machine" folder, and point my Mac at that?
  • Do I add 1TB to Volume 1, create a "Time Machine" folder, and point my Mac to that? Can I set that folder to be no larger than 1TB to constrain TimeMachine?
  • Should I have set this up differently to start, with different Volumes for the different major uses, like a Volume for the basic system, a Volume dedicated to Emby, a Volume dedicated to TimeMachine, etc?
Any insight is appreciated!

Rather than creating different volumes, we recommend creating different shared folders. This makes naming and management easier. When creating shared folders, you can set storage quotas.
