Desktop time does not follow settings in Control Panel

The time In the Control Panel window where I set the timezone (my state in Australia) and the time format (dd/mm/yyyy) matches the time displayed by my laptop.
However the time on the TNAS desktop is off by a couple of minutes (I can live with that) and is displayed in the wrong format mm/dd/yy
. A reboot does not update the time format.
I switched between time-a.nist.gov and ntp.org time servers but it made no difference.
If there is a way to turn off the time displayed on the TNAS desktop (the laptop time is there so why have another one which is wrong?) , I have not found it.
Am I missing something?
