[Help] F5-422 3rd slot failing
Posted: 20 Jan 2026, 23:28
I have an F5-422 running TOS version TOS_X642.0_5.0.176
I have 5x 6TB drives in RAID 6 on a single 16.34TB storage pool.
The system reported the RAID is degraded, with alert message:
"The RAID in storage pool 0 have been downgraded! For the safety of your data, please repair the RAID as soon as possible."
I tried shutting it down, reseating the drive and restarting.
After the restart, the drive could be read as normal and the array rebuilt.
The drives are barely 3 years old and good quality (Western Digital WD60EFPX-EC) so it seemed unlikley one would fail, but I ordered a new one anyway as a precaution.
After a few weeks it happened again.
After a reboot, I could see all drive states reporting Good, but noticed HDD3 downgraded from 6.0 Gb/s to 3.0 Gb/s.
Tried rebooting again, and now HDD3 still had state Good, but was missing from the storage pool.
Tried to reseat it again but still HDD3 was missing from the storage pool, seemed offline and could not be read.
So I replaced HDD3 with the new one and restarted the system.
The new drive could be read, so I initiated a Repair RAID
( Control Panel > Storage Manager > Storage Pool -> Edit -> Repair RAID)
This rebuild ran for around 5~10 minutes and failed, with the same alert message:
"The RAID in storage pool 0 have been downgraded! For the safety of your data, please repair the RAID as soon as possible."
HDD3 status was reported good, but again after reboot was offline.
I repeated the process to check the new drive was seated well, with the same result
(this time it automatically started to rebuild but failed again after a few minutes).
So it seems that HDD3 slot is failing. Is there any diagnostics I can run to confirm this?
Is a repair / replacement possible?
