[Help] TerraMaster F4-425 Plus – random hard power-off under disk load (TOS 6 / TrueNAS SCALE)

Post by tiem »

Hello.

I am experiencing random hard power-offs on my TerraMaster F4-425 Plus.

The shutdowns happen under disk I/O load, for example:
  • large data transfers
  • photo processing (Immich)
  • torrent downloads
  • backup jobs
Observed behavior

During normal operation the NAS suddenly powers off without any warning:
  1. HDDs stop immediately
  2. cooling fan stops
  3. front panel LEDs remain ON
  4. device automatically powers on again
This looks like a hardware-level power cut, not a clean shutdown or kernel panic.

Logs
  • Code: Select all

    dmesg -T
    — only contains logs after reboot, nothing suspicious
  • Code: Select all

    journalctl -b -1 -e
    — previous session log ends abruptly, no errors before crash
  • Code: Select all

    last reboot
    shows frequent unclean reboots

Hardware / configuration
  • Model: TerraMaster F4-425 Plus
  • CPU: Intel N150
  • RAM: stock configuration
  • System drive: separate SSD (not part of data pool)
    • previously: Samsung 980 Pro (PCIe 4.0)
    • replaced with: new PCIe 3.0 SSD to reduce temperature
  • Data drives: separate HDDs (Toshiba 4 TB (MG03ACA400) and Toshiba 6 TB (MG04ACA600E))
  • Temperatures:
    • CPU: max ~70°C
    • HDDs: max ~50°C
Memory usage does not correlate with crashes.

Operating systems tested
  • Originally running TOS 6
  • To rule out OS issues, the system was fully reinstalled with TrueNAS SCALE
  • The problem is identical on both operating systems
This strongly suggests the issue is not OS-related.

Assumptions

Based on the symptoms, possible causes may be:
  • BIOS / firmware issue
  • power delivery (PSU / VRM)
  • hardware instability under I/O load
  • CPU power management (C-states)
Questions
  • Are similar issues known for the F4-425 Plus?
  • Are there BIOS or firmware updates planned?
  • What additional logs or tests can I provide to help with diagnosis?
Thank you.
