[Help] Reinstalling TOS6 to remove NVMEs from TRAID

Hi, all,

New Terramaster user here (coming over from QNAP) and looking for a bit of assistance.

I'm in the process of setting up a T12-500 Pro. I currently have 2x1TB NVME drives and 4x24TB HDDs installed in the unit, as well as 2x16TB RAM modules. I am installing TOS6. The volume and storage pool are currently synchronising. There is no data on the drives.

The issue I have is that I selected installation of TOS6 to NVME Disk 1 and "default" installation. As others have noticed, the unit seems to have joined all HDDs and both NVMEs - inlcuding the system NVME - into one storage pool. This is not what I want to do (nor what I expected to happen, but here we are).

What I would like / intended is:

NVME Disk 1 to have TOS and applications
NVME Disk 2 to be used for cache
HDDs to be used for data storage and the TRAID array, not the SSDs

Looking around, there seems to be a few ways of achieving this after th fact, but info is a bit conflicting. I am hoping someone can given me a proper steer as to whether the below is correct and in the correct order:

1. Delete volume and reboot
2. Delete storgae pool and reboot
3. Factory reset
4. Power down the unit (assuming it restarts after factory reset?)
5. Remove all SSDs and HDDs
6. Install only 1 SSD - the one I want the system on - nothing else (presumably, I can just reinsert without wiping as it will be wiped during installation?)
7. Once TOS is installed and up and running, install the HDDs (again, presumably, I can just insert them without wiping as they will be wiped during TRAID set up? Should I also install them in a different order - e.g. HDD1 in HDD2 bay - to avoid the unit "remembering" any previous settings / set-up?)
8. Once HDDs are installed and sychronoised, power off unit and install second SSD and designate it for caching?

Is that correct?

Thanks in advance!

Hello! Welcome to the TerraMaster family, and thank you for switching from QNAP to our products. Regarding the issue you encountered while configuring the storage solution on your T12-500 Pro, here are the step-by-step recommendations we’ve prepared for you:

1.Delete the volume—no restart is required. Once the volume is successfully deleted, proceed to remove the storage pool.

2.Go to the Disk module, add NVMe Disk 1 as the system disk, and remove the other system disks.

3.Use the NVMe drive to create one storage pool and volume, and select this volume as the installation path for the App Center.

4.Use the HDDs to create another TRAID storage pool and volume for data storage.

5.Use NVMe Disk 2 to create a cache.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

Hello!
May I ask which version of TOS you are currently using? If your system is TOS 6.0.770, it supports the TOS system migration feature. You can follow these steps: First, delete the volume, then delete the storage pool. After that, migrate the TOS system to your specified hard drive, and finally, recreate the storage pool and volume.

I'm on 6.0.770-00002

I am just waiting for the initial synchronisation to finish (it's on 85%) and then will try these steps (likely tomorrow given the rate of synchronisation).

Ok that, seems to have worked - thanks!

Next question: Having re-synchronised everything, this time in TRAID+ and with only HDDs in the main storage pool, I want to add two more disks to the main storage pool and main volume.

These are the same size as the existing disks and are both physically installed in the unit.

I clicked on the relevant storage pool, clicked on edit and then selected "Add disks to Raid" option. It asked me to select one disk at a time, which I have done. The TRAID+ storage pool is currently "configuring" with the first expansion disk, with an estimated time of 63 hours

I also see now that there was an "Online RAID expansion" option. Should I have chosen this instead of "Add disks to RAID"? Would it be quicker?

If so, is there anything I can do to stop the current configuration or do I have to let it complete and use the "online RAID expansion" for the second disk?

For every additional disk added, the entire TRAID+ system requires adjustment and synchronization. The 'Online RAID Expansion' option does not apply to you; it is intended for replacing smaller disks with larger ones. Please continue to wait for the synchronization to complete before adding the next HDD to TRAID+.
