[Help] D5-300C disk 0 and 1 seen as TDAS, cannot smartctl

I have just purchased another D5-300C, I have already 3 of these units, all work fine and drives can be addressed individually. Each drive reports as its own make/model and I can run smartctl on each of them.

This new unit unfortunately has drive 0 and 1 that report as TDAS and cannot be seen directly (drives in slot 2,3,4 report correctly and can be seen by smart).

The RAID arrow is on single as I use zpool as software raid. I have done a hardware reset several times, but nothing changes.

Why is this new D5-300C different from the others? Is there a way to access all 5 drives directly?

Check the serial numbers of all your units.

It's been previously mentioned that there are multiple revisions of the D5-300C which use different firmware & even some that cannot be updated, so Terra-Master is very careful with firmware updates around the blanket model number.

There might be a firmware update issued for your recently purchased unit, which might resolve the issue you currently have.

Hello, are you referring to devices in slots 1 and 2 as drivers 0 and 1?
Are the devices in these two slots configured as a RAID array?

The drives are configured as "single" --> on the back pointing to "single".
The drives show as TDAS, smartctl does not return any information for drives in slot 1 and 2, whilst works normally for drives in slots 3,4 and 5.
I have 2 other D5-300C purchased in 2023 that show all drives individually, udev creates individual links for each drive in /dev/disk/by-id.

With this new unit udev is unable to create the required device links because the firmware does not distinguish uniquely drives 1 and 2, therefore use with zfs becomes problematic as I cannot rely upon the changing drive names as /dev/sdX.
I need to point each drive individually and I need to get S.M.A.R.T. information for each drive too. I have been in touch with TerraMaster support, but they are of no help, we are in a loop getting asked obvious questions and they are making useless suggestions (like have you checked the arrow points to "single"? Doh! I am not stupid!), or use a USB hub in the middle (WTF! :-) ).

I wonder if asmedia mptool can configure the chips correctly, but how?

The ASMedia solution in the TDAS may require/draw more power than the USB ports on the host device may be able to provide, that's why a powered hub is being suggested; it shouldn't really be in this case as the TDAS is interfacing with the host OS fine, just not the same way as your other units.

My motherboard has 10gbit USB ports that provide enough juice, also I have 3 of these units already operational since 2023. One of them is an even older unit purchased second hand, 2 were new in 2023. I have never experienced these issues with any of them. Also it would not make any sense to have a dedicated USB hub for each one. At this point I would change make/model.

The remaining issue is to make this new unit see all drives directly as with the other 3 D5-300C, terramaster support is of no help unfortunately. This unit is identical to the others inside and out, but the firmware must be different.

Hello, based on the phenomenon you described, it is preliminarily determined that there is a firmware (FW) discrepancy in the HDD1/2 control chips of the D5-300C product. Please download and use this dedicated tool to check the firmware versions of the HDD1/2 control chips in the three products you have on hand.
Additionally, could you please confirm: Before creating a RAID array with HDD1/HDD2, were you able to successfully read the relevant information of these two hard drives by running the smartctl command?

The units are attached to linux servers, and I do not use windows at all in my household. I have a macbook.
I have never configured raid, the switch is on single as I need a JBOD for zfs
