[Help] F4-210 - Random High CPU use, services going down

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post in because the problems are so strange.
Helping my friend with his F4-210 NAS. It's used mostly as a Plex server but also file storage.
We've been trying to expand the volume with no success after adding bigger drives, but that is a different problem and thread.
He's been telling me that he gets a lot of warning emails that the system is exceeding 90% usage in periods where no one is using Plex, which at least is the only thing I've personally been able to 'catch in the act' at using a lot of CPU while Plex is actually being used. He says this is often in the middle of the night and he sent me a whole stack of screenshots.
Now, aside from this, the whole web interface has been going down, as well as Plex. I don't know if file services are going down as well.
I've have him do a hard power off and power back on since he can't safely restart or shut down and it doesn't necessarily always come back up. I went over on Sunday night -- he'd had it off for a day or so -- and by the time I got there it was actually working.
What are some things I can do to troubleshoot? I'm getting concerned there's some kind of compromise to the system. When the web interface goes down like this, and if it's doing something like rebuilding/checking disks for hours on startup, how can we know?
