Where does the TOS operating system get installed?

Does anyone know where TOS, the operating system actually gets installed? I have the TerraMaster F5-221 NAS 5-Bay and have 4x8TB HDD and 1x500GB SSD.

The reason I ask is whether it would be worth installing TOS on the SSD rather than the HDD? And no, I'm NOT asking about SSD caching.

The TOS will be installed on every HDD or SSD you inserted. And there will be no TOS installed on the SSD when it is used as SSD cache.

so the OS doesnt run from the USB thats plugged into the board inside the unit, that is only used like a ROM?

what happens if all hard drives die would all the config settings also be lost and it would reload as if it was a new out of the box when a new hard drive was put in?

The built-in USB is used as initboot. TOS is not installed in it. So if all the hard drives die, all the settings will be lost. It will be a fresh install with a new drive installed.
