[Help] Upgrading NAS - Will USB Copy Work with TOS?  [SOLVED]

Hi everyone,

I currently have the F4-210 with 4 x 8TB Seagate Iron Wolf NAS drives, formatted as ext4 and RAID 6 attached and running TOS 4.2. I recently purchased the F4-423 and it will be arriving later this week. I am going to install TOS 6 on the new device, but plan on using the 4 NAS drives I already have in the F4-210.

I am going to format the NAS drives in order to install TOS 6. I was also getting some ffprobe/ SQLlite errors that was impacting my ability to add content to Emby, so now is a good time to start fresh.

I have everything successfully backed up to 4 Seagate Barracuda Hard Drives in an External Enclosure via USB Copy. The file system for the external storage is also ext4 and all discs are healthy.

I have been reading the forums but I am absolutely paranoid that I will lose the data that I have backed up.

- Will I be able to restore the data backed up to USB Copy from TOS 4.2 when I install TOS 6 on my new device?
- Will I need to keep the NAS drives formatted as ext4, or can I format them as BTRFS?
- Are there any other considerations I should take before restoring via USB Copy?

Any help and/ or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.

Your idea is achievable.
TOS6 is also capable of recognizing EXT4 filesystem external enclosures via USB. You can set up a new backup task to copy back to the NAS.
Regarding what file system your NAS disk should be formatted to, BTRFS or EXT4 are both viable.

@TMzethar - Perfect, thank you so much for your response!

I can access my USB External Storage via SMB as well, so that may be faster to copy things back to the new Terramaster. I am simply terrified to re-format the NAS drives, as I have had several experiences of losing data in the past (not Terramaster related.) I once had a guitar I had mounted to the wall fall off and land directly on my external drive I had with all my kid's baby photos. Lost everything.
