[Help] TFM Backup from F2-424 to D2-320 more than slow

Setup F2-424 (2 x 8Tb Ironwolf) with D2-320 (2 x 4Tb) connected using the TM supplied USB cable. The F2-424 had different drives which I replaced with the 8 Tb's. Did a reset and new install with the 8 Tb's in pool/volume 1 (TRaid) and copied my backup stored on an old WD Elements USB drive to volume 1 using copy/paste in the Nas Filemanger. Worked just fine , 1.89 Tb in a little over 6 hours.
After that I hooked up the D2-320 m and created a pool/volume 2 using the 4Tb's.
The fun started when I started a TFM backup from the NAS to the D2-320 the same 1.89 Tb folder took 27 hrs 36 mins to back up using the same USB 3.2 ports as the copy/paste from the old USB (3.0) drive.
If anyone could enlighten me as to why the speed difference I'd be most happy. Please keep in mind to me anything computer related is to prevent from getting bored (has been so since the late 70's) but still.

Hello! It is recommended that you first exclude the cable factor and confirm whether you are using the original data cable or a USB cable that meets the specifications, which may affect the transmission stability.

I used the USB cable that came with the D2-320 , it has a little Terramaster label attached to it. Terramaster recommends that you use that cable if you want the advertized transfer speed of 10Gb/s over the 3.2 ports , a speed which is of course always a guesstimate based on wind direction , color of user socks etc.

Hello! We analyze that the problem you are experiencing may be related to system resource contention caused by simultaneous NAS synchronization and USB backup. In this way, NAS will occupy resources during the synchronization process. It is recommended to verify the speed of USB copy after the synchronization is completed.
If further diagnosis is required, please provide system load monitoring screenshots or task logs during the operation and send them to our
[email protected] email.

I had waited till after the synchro was finished on the D2 (Thursday 1-5) before setting up the TMF task (Saturday 3-5). TMF Backup is at the moment the only app installed on the NAS it is unlikely that another taak interfered with the backup. Of course I had noticed a few weeks ago that TMF won't see the volume on the D2 when it is synchronizing. That was when the 2 4Tb drives were in the NAS and had a single 6 Tb in the D2-320. The TMF backup was just as slow in that setup. I think I will shop around for a different high speed USB cable and give TMF another chance.

We sincerely apologize for the less-than-ideal experience you've encountered.
Please note that direct copying in File Manager and backup via dedicated tools fundamentally differ in performance due to the following factors:
- Validation & Comparison: The backup process must compare modification times, sizes, and checksums (hash values) between source and destination files.
- Block-Level Transfer: Files are checked and transferred in blocks, which increases disk I/O operations.
- Random Writes: Due to differential checks, backups often involve random writes, which are slower than sequential copy operations.
- Metadata Logging: Backup tools also log file structures and version histories, adding extra write operations.
These combined overheads can impact backup speed significantly. We have reported this issue to our product team and will replicate the environment to verify the behavior. We’ll keep you updated with any progress as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!
