[Help] Volume and storage pool no longer visible from TOS - slow and degraded Nas

Hi,

Following a power cut, I ended up with degraded RAID 1 storage pool, but usual resync has not resolved the situation.

I am running on TOS_X642.0_5.1.67 with a F4-424.

Since then, I have :
- empty volume and associated storage pool in TOS settings UI
- very slow OS resulting in slow access from TOS, often timeoutting to display data, could be displaying settings data such as volume and storage which ends up empty, hence I cannot trigger the raid repair/resync, but also any other app such as docker manager takes ages to proceed if not time-outing. Patiently after several retries I could finally manage to stop all containers to limit I/Os while the file system is not healthy.
- despite no volume neither storage pool visible, my data is still here, accessible on shared folders or through TOS, I am very worried to loose decades of personal data..
- I tried rebooting on one disk only, same outcome than described above
- tried plugging the second disk and wait a day for the OS to be less slow and access features, then restarted with the hope to trigger raid repair, not successful, it ended up in the status described above.

Now I am wondering what to try, things like trying :
- to reboot on one only disk, the other one?.. no sure really it can help..
- reboot with no disk to check if the TOS system might be corrupted / broken and try to reinstall prior to plug back my 2 disks in RAID1 ?

Any suggestion appreciated, I can provide a TOS extract to support but I am not confident about the data inside the export (pwd?) to attach publicly here in the forum.

I am bit desperate, this is my second Terra Master NAS and I cannot tell the journey is seameless..
Disks are 2 different brands (iron wolf and WD Red plus 2 years old and Nas 1 yo)

Just to clarify - what HDD do you have and do you have any nvme installed.

{You cannot -
try to reinstall prior to plug back my 2 disks in RAID1
- not exactly how TOS works.}
Odds are, with a power interrupt, you do have corrupted operating system.

Thanks for caring :)

Yes I fear corrupted OS as well :(, leading to slowness, or whatever deals with accessing the disks, as sometime I can browse my data through SSH or samba quite quickly, sometime it's timeouting, getting no longer accessible.

I do not have nvme, just 2 NAS RED Disks in raid 1:
-WD Red Plus 6 To NAS 3,5"- 5400 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, CMR, 64 Mo
- Seagate IronWolf 6 To, NAS HDD, CMR 3,5" SATA 6 Gbit/s 5 400 RPM, 256 Mo

If corrupted OS, do you think of any means to reinstall without loosing my data, ideally I would have preferred getting back the access to Storage/Volume in TOS to trigger thre repair, prior to reinstall ?

Previously on one only disk I could see the Volume and storage pool, TOS telling it s degraded, hence I plugged back second disk hoping I could repair but it never came back in TOS UI.. (but data still accessible from SSH/Samba when not too slow)

Any particular reason you are still on TOS5.1.67?
I read back on some of your previous posts (notably this thread viewtopic.php?p=34062#p34062) and I would have thought (given you have acquired a newer nas model) you might have upgraded to higher version or even TOS6. Running a lower version adds a little complexity as you will be missing the many advancements in operating system. Anyway, if I am correct, and you have the (nominal) 8GB system partition already on your system, re-installation of the o/s should follow similar process as you have already seen.

No particular reason, just it was not suggested in TOS and I haven't touch settings for a while.. I did (hopefully) a clean install for tos 5, and I have the 8g sys partition indeed.

I don't know what to do now.. disks are not visible in TOS settings, while obviously I can access my data through shares folders and ssh..
I feel the OS/system is very slow, TOS says CPU is often at 100%< while ps or top unix commands in ssh do not show high resources consumption..

I fear restarting will lead to OS taking days to kick in slowly and reaching same state..

I wonder if I should unplug one disk and try to boot on one, see if it s any better in term of disk / storage being recognized..
Or if I should just wait few more days to see if the OS is just very slow at getting grasp of the storage, as everything was super slow..

My problem is at any restart, my containers starts and it s not helping as processing a lot of I/o..on top of super slow operations..

Thanks for helping mate! Much appreciated 👍

Btw, are you happy with your nvme setup?

Do you think I could reinstall tos in some SSDs to get faster OS and then plug back my disks and get my data back ?

1. TOS5 never advertised updates. You had to follow the update threads and do manual updates. (Good reasons for that). TOS5.1.145 is latest and you need to be there for update to TOS6.
2. NVME is ok but has to be in the knowledge that you won't ever see "advertised" speeds due to method of implementation. (1x pcie3.0 lane per socket on basic 424 models). No point going excessive on spec. (Check spec sheets for particular versions.)
3. Just my opinion, but no point going to nvme without TOS6. TOS 5 will still spread o/s across both nvme and hdd and that has some potential drawbacks. With TOS6 you get the option to chose UP TO TWO drives on which to install the o/s (Although all drives will still be partitioned similarly, just the "non-included" drives won't be active.)
4. If you are running TOS5 and go to TOS6 you will again be faced with a re-install if you want to switch the o/s to ONLY be on the nvme.
5. Just as a "by the way", I'm not sure your dissimilar hdd (buffer size and brand) are an optimal choice for RAID1.

I see.. I would go TOS6 definitely, I wasn't aware no updates advertisment on tos 5...

based on your educated advises, I may see one valid path to survive :p

do you think it would work to :
1) unplug all disks, put an nvme and do a clean install of tos 6
2)replug one of my former disks. I am not clear at this stage I can access the data..
3)resync my old disk' storage pool raid 1 to another disk (either the other former one, or one new more identical I would have to buy)

I don't think your proposal works because (at least) of the major shift in the o/s system from 5.1 to 6. (But your current o/s version is something that passed very quickly through my memory banks :( ) - maybe someone @TMSupport can walk you through this. If not the on-line support (available from main web site) then via email and link them to this thread for reference/background.

My option would be to re-install current version to, at least, get system up and running. Then update to latest 5.1.145 to be in a position to update further after you have considered the options. I'm sure a lot of people are still on 5.1.145. Tos6 is a significant move needing reconfiguration of system (users/passwords/etc) not to mention installed apps.

@TerraMaster Support @TMSupport any help / support / leads would be appreciated.

I have restarted my Nas on one disk only from my RAID, proceeded with manual reinstall the current OS to check if perf would be any better but TOS is still taking ages to kick in, often timeouting when attempting to display disks or storage or volume in Settings, Setting UI either time out or end up empty with no data to display, while accessing the NAS through SSH I can access my data..
