TerraMaster F4-220 NAS - probably Hardware Failure - Powers On but no LAN light and red disk lights

Hello all,

it seems like I got the same problem as the user in this thread viewtopic.php?t=6246&hilit=TNAS+F4+220+Will+not+boot

Already tried the same as described in viewtopic.php?f=76&t=423
But can't get further than step 4 an no network light switches to green, so I can't even get a connection to the NAS. Also tried with a pingsweeper and can't find the device IP.

There is also no beep when restarting with or without the hard drives in the case.

What are my options?
1. Buy a new TNAS Device and insert the HDDs there (if so - do I need a new one or a used F4-220 again so I can access the HDDs?)
2. Is there a way to boot it again or access it as described by the user in viewtopic.php?t=6246&hilit=TNAS+F4+220+Will+not+boot
3. If nothing of this is possible, how can I at least save the data from the HDDs as there are terrabytes of photos I only saved there?

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

In response to your problem, here are some solutions we offer.
1. You can purchase a new TNAS model (220/420/221/421/422 series) to inherit the hard drive. Then, reinstall the TOS on the new NAS. During installation, select Custom/Manual to manually install the TOS version you used before.
If it prompts "Delete/format", do not continue and contact us to assist you with the exception.
2. You can also use the mdadm&LVM tool of the Linxu computer or Linux VM to access the hard disk data.
3. You can also read the data through some professional hard disk tools.

Thanks for your fast reply!

I looked through every thread I could find regarding this issue and landed also on the topic of creating a new initboot on a USB Stick. I was able to sucessfully create one with help of thisthread viewtopic.php?t=6433&start=10 and the suggested program by Gremlin 'balenaEtcher' by Balena Ltd.

I also tried to fix the battery inside, tested it with iron wire and changed it. But nothing worked. So I guess the only chance I got is solution 1 and to get a new NAS case!?

For reinstalling the TOS on the new NAS. How can I find out which was the last version that was used before since I can't access the frontend anymore I have no clue what was installed last by the automated updates. And as I had a RAID 5 with 4 plates running can you tell me if this solution would even work?

If the system partition of those disks are still 2GB, you can install any TOS4 and TOS5.0.176. If their system partition is 8GB, you may want to consider burning an Initboot containing a TOS5-specific bootstrap to install the latest TOS5. (Note that if prompted to delete/format, please stop the operation.)

Have the exact same problem.
The F4-220, powers on, all 4 drive LED's are red and remain red. No network connectivity.

Seems like a failed board. Anyone found a replacement board we could purchase?

Seems unlikely since they have said they don't even sell replacement fans - and those use 'non-standard' connectors. Given the cost of available TM 'own' parts (ie expensive) ebay may be a better route for a working replacement.

So coming back to this thread with a report how I worked this out.

As recommended I bought a new TNAS (TERRAMASTER F4-421 NAS 4-Bay). And inserted my HDDs in there. After turning it on it wanted me to install the Software and delete/format as described before i didnt do so but waited some time until I suddenly without further configs could log in to TNAS Desktop via the web interface again. It just worked, which was kind of a surprise. I was able to save all of the data and stored it onto new SSDs and will change to another brand.

Thanks for your help and I can recommend doing it like the guys described in the thread.
