I have an F8 SSD with 3 x Crucial P3 Plus 4TB.. this is connected to a 10gbe switch into a Mac Studio with a 10gbe connection. I also have a Terramaster F5-422 connected via 10gbe with Crucial P3 Plus 4TB with F/w 5.1.145.

Despite disk speed tests showing the F8 is double the read and write of the F5, loading images/video is slower off the F8.

As an example of the issue.. the F8 takes 4 seconds to display a pic and I can see how it slowly creates the thumbnails, whereas the F5 loads a pic in under a second and blazes through the thumbnail creation.. I bought this NAS thinking it would be faster than the F5 for editing, this is not the case currently.

If I run Blackmagic Disk Speed Test I get double the speed for read and write for the F8 over the F5, which I expected. However for file use the F8 is definitely slower than the F5, which makes no sense to me.

Before I get replies saying the drives aren't suitable.. I have installed TrueNAS Scale on the unit and the speeds are super fast loading images etc, plus the Disk Speed test also seem to indicate the drives are fine.. it seems that TOS 6 is the issue. I am not keen to run TrueNAS on the device as im not as familiar with it as I am with TOS.

Anyone able to explain the unusual behaviour or suggest a way to speed up the file reading?

apologies the F5 has 4 8th seagate iron wolf drives in.. not SSDs, of course.. can't see how to edit the post

May I ask how you are accessing the images?
SMB sharing (File explorer/Finder)?
Terra Photos?
TOS File Manager?

Apologies.. finder on a Mac and also tried windows explorer, same issue the F5 is much quicker which doesn't make sense

I will also add I have erased the Array and TOS and started from scratch twice and same issue

ok have done more testing it's definitely something in F/w 6.0.507, if it was a hardware issue with the drives, or the F8, id get the same results in TrueNAS Core..

MTU on the F5-422 and F8 SSD set the same, both 10Gbe connections via the same switch, the F8 is on F/w 6.0.507, the F5 is on F/w 5.1.145

F8 - TOS 6.0.507 - slow copy via Mac/Windows - 19.6gig of small files from the F5 to F8 takes 21 minutes, this does not happen adding the F5 to remote share on the F8 and copying via TOS, only takes a few minutes.. same result xfering from Mac/windows desktop to F8
F8 - TOS 6.0.507 - takes 4 times as long to open pics etc than the F5 on both Mac and Windows, but opens them quickly on the TOS file explorer in the F8
F8 - TrueNAS CORE latest version - is quicker with all file operations via Mac/windows, even slightly faster than the F5, which I would expect given one is SSD the other Platter drives.

I'd rather not use TrueNAS Core as I'm not as familiar with the operations on it as I am with TOS, plus the remote drive mounting is invaluable on the TOS.. is this a known bug on TOS 6.0.507?

Would appreciate anyone else running the F8 with that firmware telling me what photo loading times are like for them.

Might be a bit late, just got the same device and the exact same issue: Running on

FW: 6.0.519-00144
Disks: 8x LexarNM790's in raid0
UDM Pro-SE
Unifi XG
Sonnet 10G TB3 nic
Mac Studio / Macbook M2Pro / etc

Our disk speeds run at the expected ±1000/1000, however when we access single files, load a lot of data (RED Camera files) or try to edit from the device the speeds drop to an unacceptable speed.

We have some other servers on the network which all do 1000/1000 speeds, the f8 with current firmware is not working for us.

Sorry for the trouble, we have found the cause of the problem and will fix it in a future TOS release.

Hi,

I've spent 15 days (and some nights!) trying to get this to work as it should in 2025. It's beyond frustrating that a company with so many years in the industry still hasn't addressed such fundamental problems.
When will TOS be updated to finally fix this? This is not acceptable in 2025.
