Buy two F4's and use one as a replacement part without risking data loss - possible?

Post by naster »

Hello,

I'm thinking about buying an F4-223 or maybe F4-423 and configure it with RAID5 disks. In case not the disks fail but the NAS hardware itself I'd like to buy 2 x F4-223 or 2 x F4-423.
Is it possible in case of failure of the first F4 to just pull out the RAID5-drives, put them into the second F4 (in the same order), power on the second F4 and continue using it without any data loss?

Also, ideally, I would like to use the F4's with TrueNAS instead of the original software. So if that makes any difference to my question, an answer would also be nice. Thanks.

YES. If the first F4-223 or F4-423 encounters an issue, you can use the second F4-223 or F4-423 to receive the disk from the first F4, allowing for continued normal operation.

Great, thank for the answer. I was just worried that the RAID5 would make problems in the new (second) F4, not being recognized, having to be reconfigured or something like that. But if it's just plug and play, that's what I want. You probably don't know if that's true when running TrueNAS also, do you? (I know 3rd party software is not a TerraMaster problem, would just be nice to know :-) ).
