Install Apps on M.2 NVMe SSD

Hi

I have a F2-423. I have TOS installed on a 500G M.2 NVMe SSD. I have Hyper Cache setup on another M.2 NVMe SSD. I have 2 6TB HDDs setup in RAID 1 for my storage (Volume 1).
I would like to install my applications on the SSD which I have TOS installed on, however when I go into settings I only have the option to select Volume 1 as the installation location.

I thought perhaps that I need to create a storage volume on the SSD however it alerted me that the SSD would be erased if I tried to do so.

What would be the correct way to do this?

Thanks

Generally, SSDs that have been used as SSD caches are not selectable for volume creation.
You mentioned that you have both NVMe SSDs (sdza and sdzb), please go to the Hyper Cahe page to confirm that the SSD used to create the cache is sdza or sdzb.

Hyper Cache is installed on sdzb. TOS is installed on sdza. I would like the apps installed on sdza as well.

First, you need to create a volume on sdza.

I tried to create a volume on sdza but got a warning that it would erase all the data on the ssd. TOS is installed in sdza so would that not delete the operating system?

TOS is installed on one of the partitions of sdza, the remaining space can be used to create storage.
Please continue, this will not affect the system partition data where TOS is installed.

Thanks for the clarification. I’ve done this it is working as expected.

Sounds good. I am curious, however. Is there a point to mounting OS+apps on the ssd? This is in the context that the OS & swap partitions are mirrored on the other hdd (as per standard normal TOS setup) and any data written to the OS partition (and apps still do this) will still be written to the hdd mirrors.

I probably have a very limited knowledge of how most of this stuff works as you completely lost me at mirrored swap partitions.

In my mind, the idea behind all of this would be that having TOS and apps installed on the ssd would have a performance benefit as the drive is faster than the hdds. When poking around in the interface etc, the hdds would not need to spin up - I guess performance and hdd longevity, and finally if I wanted to replace the hdds I could just swap them out without needing to reinstall TOS on them.

Thanks for posting back. Having a similar discussion on another thread and I'm trying to establish what actually happens. Unfortunately I don't have an NVMe capable device to test the various options.
