Inquiry on RAID 1 Recovery on Terramaster D5 Hybrid

Just got the Terramaster D5 Hybrid. Populated with 2x Seagate Barracuda 4TB 5400 rpm, set to RAID 1 for cold storage / archive / files I want to keep but won't be accessing often (maybe once or twice a year only).
  • Is there a utility or application that Terramaster uses to monitor the health of the drives and the RAID 1 config (if that makes sense)?
I've had one bad experience with a cheap Chinese hardware RAID storage device - where the RAID controller? was not as stable as I had hoped for. Fortunately I had a backup of what was on that Chinese RAID device. This time around, before I start populating the D5 Hybrid, and committing to the RAID 1 config, WHEN one of the drives EVENTUALLY fail,
  • what are the steps to properly recover the RAID 1 config? Can someone point me to a resource or reference to properly do so?
Also, RAID 1 best practices inquiry, I've chosen Better Performance Policy https://imgur.com/a/4rHmE8m
  • Is it safe to simply shutdown machine and NOT safely remove the hardware or eject the DAS?
Please let me know if my inquiry is unclear.

The best way to fix RAID 1 in hardware such as D5 Hybrid is to safely shut down the device, replace the faulty hard drive, and then the device will repair the array itself. The replaced hard drive cannot be smaller than the faulty hard drive.

Thank you for responding. Alright, so it will automatically rebuild the RAID 1 config. Is there a utility for me to check about the health of the drives?

UPDATE:
Just got back from Terramaster Support.
D5 Hybrid Resources here.

There is NO utility or application to indicate RAID health. Hardware LED indicators will let you know which drive is faulty (with a RED blink indicator). Shut down, swap out the faulty drive with the same size or larger. Power on, HDD LED indicator should blink orange to indicate it's rebuilding the RAID 1 config. This is what I gather from my tech support chat. I will be sure to update if this is what I experience WHEN a drive fails.

Any SMART application (like Hard Disk Sentinel) or even just Disk Management over at Windows 10 - will only let you see the health of the disk in BAY 1. In a RAID 1 config, Bay 1 is the first drive in the array, Bay 2 is the mirror drive; which you will not see or cannot monitor - except for the LED indicator on the unit.

Still looking into the best practices on DAS Policies.

If your D5 is attached to Windows(n) Machine, (I may have misunderstood that), Have you considered 3rd party disk tools. I use MiniTool Partition Wizard, but I have not tried that with any raid connected devices. I do use a built-in caddy on my windows10 machine (cheapish) so I can unplug any drive from NAS and plug it into Windows10 for purposes of checking drive health (usually SMART data) or wiping/formatting. Works easiest with TM tool-less drive caddies, but beggars cannot be choosers. ;)
