D5 Thunderbolt 3 run tasks?

Post by DHeckeler »

Just got a D5 Thunderbolt 3 RAID enclosure. Have two 20TB drives set up as RAID 1. Is it possible to have it run tasks? I'd like to attach an external 16TB Seagate USB drive to act as a back-up and have Carbon Copy Cloner or something equivalent run daily in the middle of the night. I know it's possible to do something like this with a Synology NAS, but not sure about this enclosure. Thanks!

The Thunderbolt enclosures don't run their own OS, they are a peripheral to connect to a Thunderbolt equipped computer.

You could definitely use that app to perform what you'd like, however if you'd like to schedule it to run at a certain time, unless that app supports triggering it at a specific time, you'd need to use a separate scheduler for the task.

No, the D5 Thunderbolt 3 itself can't run tasks like scheduling backups. It's designed as high-speed storage, not a mini-computer.

However, there are two options:

Run Carbon Copy Cloner on your computer: Schedule Carbon Copy Cloner (or similar) to run on your main computer at night, backing up from the D5 to the Seagate drive.

Consider a NAS with built-in scheduling: If scheduling backups from the enclosure itself is important, look into NAS devices (like Synology) that offer built-in scheduling for backup tasks.
