Thanks. I will try to disconnect the CMOS battery and see what happens.

Where is the battery located in the F2-421?

Found the CMOS battery. It is on the motherboard. I had to take off the screws from the motherboard to the casing to get to it. It took a CR2032 battery....like you put into your car key fob.

I will let you know if this works.

So, it still looks like this is an issue. The system stays up a lot longer, i.e. 20 minutes to maybe an 2 hours.

I still see the system halt though:

Broadcast message from elw124@TNAS-376D (Wed Feb 28 00:20:41 2024):

Nothing in the /var/adm/messages right before the crash.

I've checked in TOS and it confirms my drives are in good condition and reading/writing and temps are normal.

Me too: my F2-221, also purchased in 2020, started turning itself off (after many, many other problems). Remote Assist said it was a hardware issue, probably the power switch, which would be 'difficult' to replace. The long and short of it is, we need a new NAS.

Small world, huh?

Cheers,

Part of my process for 'fixing' my F2-221 was to dismantle the front panel, remove the switch panel and clean with electrical contact cleaner and compressed air. (I have no complaint since this was purchased 2nd hand). Additionally (after removing power cord  ), remove battery (while you are in there), short the battery terminals for several seconds, replace the battery with a new one. Re-seat the USB flash drive (after cleaning contacts), clean sata drive slots. One or all of the above help cure my nas.

Morning Gremlin - thanks for the reply. Also, I'm glad you remembered to remove the power cord...

Your solution (for the power switch) was to clean it: excellent idea! How did you get the front off? I can't see any screws so I assume it just pops off? Sounds scary... Did you see any 'debris' on the switch contacts which might have caused problems, or did you just clean it to see if it would help?

And, of course, you made a detailed YouTube video to explain all this...?

Thanks again Gremlin,

Chris

You will quickly realise that the power cord HAS to be removed to dismantle casing - however if, like me, you want to check stuff without continually rebuilding the case, you MIGHT connect power cord to bare chassis. Anyway, it's only 12 volts ...........

You won't find me on any social media platforms, so don't anticipate any videos now or in the future.

Once the rear panel is removed (no of screws dependent on model and fan(s) disconnected) the rest is fairly obvious. The metal casing slides off of the chassis and the rear of the front panel can be accessed. On my 221 the switch is an integral part of the led panel which can be removed from the front panel by a couple of small screws. The front panel "switch" itself is nothing more than a flexible piece of plastic that bends sufficiently to operate a micro-contact.

Everything is a case of 'suck it and see'. Nothing obvious.

Morning Gremlin - agian, many thanks for this information. I followed your other thread and, thus emboldened, I took our TNAS apart.

:o

The micro switch - a tiny 2mm cube - is mounted to a small PCB, so I took it out (damaging the little multi-pin socket in the process), and thought about getting a new board as it would have the switch. I tried the numbers but only one number string got sensible results, and that offered many different boards, all too big, and the first one was a cool $5000. (I think it may have been an ex-military board as, stunningly, these seem quite sort-after.) Anyway, with that search drawing a blank, and because out little NAS had other problems (that Remote Assist couldn't sort out), I'm going to wait for a new box. I'll have to talk with TM sales.

Of your thread (viewtopic.php?t=5774), the success of spraying it with WD40 or contact cleaner is bizzare indeed! If it works, then you've really hit the bulls-eye! Well done indeed. (And the gent who used standard WD40: who knew?)

Thanks again for your help Gremlin,

Chris
