New TOS 6 File Management Experience

Post by TMroy »

Since its inception, the "File Manager" in TOS has always been well-received by users. In an effort to provide users with an even smoother and more convenient file management experience, the TOS research and development team has actively learned from the best practices of file management in Windows and Mac OS while investing significant energy into deeply optimizing the "File Manager" tool in TOS 6. Additionally, a multitude of new convenient features have been added. We sincerely hope that this brand-new "File Manager" will become the preferred choice for all users.

Here are some of the new and improved features in this all-new "File Manager":

1. Improved Directory Navigation
In TOS 6, we have overhauled and designed the directory navigation categories, systematically organizing the directories, user directories, volumes, and external storage that users often access. This change makes it simpler for users to browse through the storage directories of TNAS.

2. Column Display Mode
We have introduced a new column display mode that allows users to visually expand folders in a hierarchical manner. This feature allows users to browse up to five levels of folder hierarchy simultaneously in a single page, and files can be dragged and dropped within the columns, making operations more convenient.

3. Tabs
We have added a new feature that allows users to add multiple tabs, which is equivalent to opening multiple file management windows simultaneously. This feature allows users to browse file directories in different windows and easily perform operations such as moving, copying, and pasting files between different tabs, greatly improving efficiency.

4. Thumbnail Size Switching
We have added a new feature that allows users to switch the size of thumbnail images when viewing image files. Users can choose from large, medium, and small sizes of thumbnail images according to their needs. By using larger thumbnail images, users can get a better preview of image details.

5. File Select All and Invert Selection
We have added a new feature to select all files using the mouse or keyboard shortcuts in various modes. Additionally, we have added an invert selection feature in the right-click menu to enhance batch file selection flexibility.

6. Task Progress
When users need to copy/move multiple files, a new task menu will calculate the overall progress of all copied/moved files, improving the user experience.

7. Document Preview
We have introduced a new document preview feature. This allows users to preview documents without opening additional software when searching for or confirming the correct document. Currently, supported previewable document types include images, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, TXT, etc.

8. More Upload Sources
In TOS 6, users can avail the newly added TNAS upload option in addition to uploading from their computers for convenient file operations. This feature makes it easy to complete operations like uploading updates, lists, system configurations, and user lists.

9. File Conflict Strategy
We have added a new feature to handle file conflicts that may occur during copying/moving/uploading files with existing files. Users can choose from options like skipping, overwriting, or renaming files based on their requirements.

10. Disable Image and Video Thumbnails
To enhance the loading speed of file listings, we provide the option for users to disable thumbnail generation for images and videos.

11. Customize External Sharing Link
When users share files or folders from the file management page, the system uses TNAS.online as the default external network access path. Now, users can customize the external network access path, such as using DDNS or other URL paths.

12. Text Editor
To cater to users' text editing needs, we have added a new text editor feature that allows users to create and edit text files more conveniently.

Hi, the file system and file manager in TOS 6 supports the apostrophe (') character?
In TOS 4 and 5 all files and folders that contains apostrophe are renamed automatically, with removing of that character, and this is not pleasant behavior. Also TNAS mobile app has special characters limitations.
I'm talking about this viewtopic.php?p=13525#p13525 and viewtopic.php?p=29617#p29617

There are other special characters limitations?
Could you kindly clarify this point?

Thanks TM for the effort in revamping the TOS periodically! :)

  • 2x HDD WD RED PLUS 4TB CMR [RAID1]

This issue only occurs in some TOS 4 versions of the old 210 model, and the TOS version of the x86 model does not have this issue. Of course, TOS6 also does not have this issue.

Hi TMzethar,
Sorry but in my previous request I'm referring to TOS 5.1.123 and TNAS Mobile 3.2.31.
See also here: viewtopic.php?p=33869#p33869

Indeed, below there is the current list of not supported special characters (with also apostrophe/single quotes) in TNAS Mobile 3:

And this is the error in TOS 5.1 when I try to create\rename folders and files with apostrophe:

Could you kindly explain me how I can use the apostrophe in folders and files?
Thanks

If the 210 model is "old" (is that now your excuse for not upgrading it to TOS 5, and soon TOS 6?) maybe you should stop selling it on your own website which gives the impression to potential customers that it is a currently supported model and not something you have abandoned https://www.terra-master.com/global/pro ... ?page=desc

The SoC in the 210 series devices lacks newer Linux kernel support due to its manufacturer (RealTek) choosing not to develop it further; every NAS manufacturer that uses the RTD1296b is in the exact same situation.

TOS builds follow Linux LTS kernels, so unless RealTek has a change of heart for the SoC, the 210 series devices will continue to receive TOS 4.2.× builds with internally developed workarounds to implement patches.

Other manufacturers have similarly either implemented workarounds to maintain support or abandoned devices based on them.

See, now that is an actual explanation! Thanks

I bought the 210 when TOS 5 was announced as coming out soon, at no point did they say anywhere that it wasn't coming to the 210, when it came out but not for the ARM units people asked and they would say things like "soon", then it came out for some and they started saying things like they are looking into it... eventually, they just stopped responding to enquiries about it. Why couldn't they just be honest like that and actually explain the problem? I still think it is wrong for them to continue to sell the unit without making it very very clear that it will not be receiving the significant upgrades they talk about elsewhere, but at least that is an explanation.... if they had made that clear at the time I may well have purchased a different unit or if they didn't know at the time but stopped obfuscating when they did maybe the unit could have been returned and a different one purchased but of course now it is too late.

The system of 4.2 can work normally and is still under maintenance, why can't it be sold? Is there any legal provision that stipulates TNAS running the 4.2 system cannot be sold?

I didn’t say anything about legality at all, I am talking about ethically, nowhere do you make it very clear that it is not receiving major upgrades (which is incredibly annoying when someone reports an issue and the response is “that is fixed in TOS 5” exactly like your support person did in this thread) that all the other models you sell receive, only security fixes

The 'update' beyond 4.2.× remains in limbo with the developers per themselves (TMRoy) @ viewtopic.php?p=33890#p33890; there's a slim chance something is being worked on & may eventually become available with likely TOS 4.3.× or possibly TOS 5.×.× build numbers (this would likely be some form of custom/hybrid workaround LTS kernel unless RealTek seemingly finally made support available on newer releases).
