BIOS or OS setting? RJ45 Socket interface and LAN font panel LED's Not working!

Hello All,

Just a quick question..
I purchased my F4 423 late August ( see signature ), when I first plugged it in and connected the CAT 6 cable I found all Front panel LED's illuminate for power and HDD except the relative front panel LAN LED and the rear LAN RJ45 socket interface indicators fail to illuminate in any way.

Don't get me wrong as the data cable link is fine and I have full functionality but no indication of connection. The light on my router front panel lights up indicating a link however my rear RJ45 sockets on my router bank has no such indicator LED's.

I know if it is functioning normally it is no big deal but I like to glance over once in a while at my tower cabinet and quickly scan the lights mentally and thus see the status. For example if the LAN LED is frantic on the front panel with activity and you know you are not uploading or no-one else is carrying out any tasks then it would give me an early indication something is going on and I would investigate immediately.

No light activity is concerning for me, or should I say not being able to see any status is concerning...

So I tried the obvious and changed the cable and also tried other devices with RJ45 interface LED's that are working.

I found that the other devices (other routers) showed activity on their interfaces once connected to my NAS via Interface 1 and or 2 but there is not handshaking illumination on the NAS interface LED's.

I have noted that if I plug in my CAT6 cable into a fresh NAS RJ45 interface (that has not been connected for a while) that you get a momentary flash of both RJ45 LED indicators (link and activity), like a spike on the line as it is connected so this says to me that the LED's work.

So I am now down to three trains of thought..

1. There is a fault on the new kit for the LAN data indicators, both interfaces and front panel?

2. There is a BIOS setting that needs updating to enable the DATA status of the RJ45 LED's to work (this would then possibly indicate on the front panel too)?

3. Is there is a setting in TOS5 that needs turning on to enable the LED's for both interfaces and front panel indicator?

I can take some pictures if required if further examples are required.

So TM support please can you advise regards statements 1.. 2.. or.. 3.. ???

Any direction from the forum or support would be appreciated and helpful..

TIA

Hi,
It looks like you have previously completed the TOS installation and initialization of F4-423.
Normally, when your TNAS is connected to the Internet, the network lights on the front and back will flash. It does not indicate whether TNAS is being accessed in real time.
This is not a keypad or BIOS issue.

Morning,
  • Thanks for your reply..
The LED's indicate link and data activity.. :!: and thus should be working as a brand new piece of kit.
  • The RJ45 ports and LAN front panel LED's in question did work from day one out of the box packaging. These are both driven by the same MB controller.
When I said that I can see a momentary flash, only on first plug in of the CAT6 cable ( not on second time ). I was just explaining and using that as an example that the LED's are not faulty but the MB controller for them has an issue. The controller drives both the rear RJ45 port and front LAN panel LED's

  • When you buy a product you expect it to be working 100%..
Anyway I asked the questions about settings, as I never assume too much as I don't know how your architecture is established but as a majority rule you can't turn the embedded onboard RJ45 ports LED's off or the aux output either.

  • I have established it is a hardware fault on the motherboard.
I have supplied video evidence with online chat and await a resolution. (YouTube links below)
  • Preferably to help the company and as it would be the cheaper option, it would be good to have just a bare bones MB swap sent to me then I would send back the original but I might just return the whole unit as I am inside the returns period.

I would like to remind you of what is stated on you Amazon.fr shop page.
  • The Translation for this is...
If the product has a quality defect or does not meet your needs, you can contact us within 30 days of purchase to replace it and obtain an additional 6-month warranty in compensation.
  • I would appreciate an official response to my suggestion or contact from you Amazon team for a resolution please.
TIA

Thank you very much for your video, it made me realize that my previous understanding based only on the description was wrong.
According to the phenomenon in the video, it is not yet certain that it is a network card hardware problem.

Can you try the following two?

Try operation A: Please start TNAS with only M.2 SSD installed and see if the same situation occurs?

Try operation B: Please try booting TNAS without any HDD or M.2 SSD installed to see if the same situation occurs?

If you find that the network light is displayed normally under any operation of A or B, it means that there is not a hardware problem, but other unknown problems. We have some suspicions about this, but need more information from you to confirm.

Please tell us what you see when you try A and B, and we'll judge the situation according to it. If necessary, we can arrange for engineers to remotely troubleshoot and repair the issue.

Hello again.
  • Im Glad we are now on the same page.
Regards your tasks..
  • I have already complete both those tasks ( A and B) and supplied a youtube link for that to your online chat support guy (Mike) who said he would escalate this to both an engineer and your Amazon team.
but I have not heard anything from your marketing team as of yet. I came this route as it is direct but I think I might now progress via the official route unless you know if it is a software issue.
  • With everything out HDD, NVMe there is no difference and the LED's still don't work. with only one NVMe only in with TOS5 installed on it still has the same problem.
I have tried multiple variants before contacting you to avoid wasting your time to see if its external hardware causing the issue but it is not.

OK, please give one last try, connect your TNAS directly to the computer (excluding the influence of the router/switch), and repeat A and B above.

PS.

The above youtube link was to show initialisation (3 beeps) and all kit out and still not LED's working..

As I have said I have tried all variants including your variant (A and B).

This units onboard RJ45 and front panel LAN LED's has never work from day one of taking out of the box and setting it up for the first time.

I didn't escalate because I thought it might be a BIOS or OS setting thus asked for your input.

It would be good to hear your thoughts regards your suspicions.

I can enable the necessary comms for temporary access but failing any successful resolution I would look to have a replacement issued but it must be with the return period (as per my signature).

Else I will just process a return..

Again TIA for your input.

  • We have a result..
I did initially think this was a handshaking issue so I tried it on two different devices connected to the F4 423..
  • 1. One router without LED's on it RJ45 port bank (but shows connection in its front screen - TPlink router)
  • 2. One router with LED's on it RJ45 port bank (Sky box router).
All hardware variants failed to handshake with the port LED's ( handshake light up ) when connected as per videos.
  • However.....
All hardware config variants..
  • 1. No NVMe, No HDD's
  • 2. NVMe only
  • 3. NVMe and HDD's

All handshake (RJ45 LED's Light up) when connected to my iMAC RJ45 port. This interface is not configured and has no outside connection it is just a hardware test.
  • Ok...my apologies.. I have to eat humble pie...
So (not to assume the obvious) what does this mean and what is going on here?
  • And is it something you can fix via software to work correctly considering these routers are not old kit?
And if this can be fixed would it come along with TOS6..
