F2-221 updated from 5.1.37 with no issues. SMB still capped at 27MB/s though.

Since you updated the TOS and the problem persists, it may not have much to do with TOS. SMB speed is related to many factors, and it is recommended to check other parts as well.
You can check step by step according to the transmission line: computer hard disk read and write performance > computer network card bandwidth > computer to router connection > router itself > router to TNAS connection > TNAS network card bandwidth > TNAS hard disk read and write performance.
In addition, this is also related to the files you copy and use. It is recommended to use large files for testing.

General suggestion for improvement:
In TOS Control Panel in the System Update section please put a large red font warning to always wait at least 2 weeks and read all update related forum posts (please also provide link for convenience) BEFORE hitting the Update button.

Currently that strategy saves me from wasting dozens of hours of my lifetime.

That's all very well, but how do you deal with those people who continually ignore warnings and fail to read the release notes?

Can we install 5.1.40 on a system with \2gb if we delete volumes and partitions first and start over?

The first post doesn't offer an .INS new installation image, so if you'd like to go down the clean install route, allow the initialization wizard to grab the newest available option or download the newest available image from https://support.terra-master.com/download for your particular TNAS & use the custom option in that wizard.

You can then upgrade to 5.1.40 afterwards.

I have said it many times before, we are all beta testers, however it's getting a little old now! Updates should contain fixes and new features that WORK!
