Cloudsync creating extra files starting ._

I'm using Cloudsync to back up to OneDrive.
Recently it has started to create additional small files starting with ._ as part of the backup on both the NAS and OneDrive.
For example, if I had a file called "news.pdf", not only would that be backed up, I'd also have a file called "._news.pdf" created in the same directory. The new file is always 4kb in size, regardless of the original.
What's going on?
