D5 TB3 on iMac 12,1; FW800 or TB1

Hi,

I'm having to using an older iMac, a 12.1 running High Sierra.
The only ports I have are either a FW800 or TB1.

Can I use, please, my D5 TB3 via either the the FW800 or the TB! port please?
I understand that it will be slower than using the TB3 (USBC style port), I just want to check that I won't corrupt the data.

The old system, ironically the newer one, used TB3 and Ventura, if that makes a difference.
I appreciate I will need to install a driver for macOS High Sierra, as mentioned, my only concern is making sure I do not corrupt the existing data on the D5 TB3.

Thanks for your help,

Simon.

That should be this new, older iMac, only has FW800 or TB1 style ports (and yep, I know that TB1 and TB2 use the same style cable).

thanks; couldn't find how to edit the original post.

Regards,
Simon,

Technically, since Apple labels their adapter as bidirectional, with a USB-IF certified USB4 extension & a ThunderBolt 2 cable, you may be able to connect the D5 (TB3) to a previous generation ThunderBolt connection.

Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that this will work, especially since extension cables are generally against both ThunderBolt 3 & USB4 specifications, however that doesn't mean that they don't exist & could work.

Also, the cost of adapting the connections is somewhat costly.

Ah, I happen to have TB3 (USBC) to TB converter already.
So all I need is a TB2 cable.

Just to check, if I try this the data will be okay, if for some reason, it doesn't work?

Many thanks for the reply
