Troubleshooting Slow File Transfer and Random Interruptions on TerraMaster USB DAS
Applicable models:
D2-300/D2-310/D2-320
D4-300/D4-320/D4-320U/D6-320/D9-320
D5-300C/D5-300
D5 Hybrid/D8 Hybrid
If your TerraMaster USB DAS storage device is installed correctly but you're experiencing slow file transfer speeds (e.g., 5–20MB/s or lower) or random interruptions, the following common causes and solutions may help.
1. Weak USB bus power
-Solution: Some Windows PCs have weak USB bus power, to address the issue of weak USB port power supply on some computer hosts, it's recommended to purchase an additional powered USB hub. Connect this USB hub to the computer, and then connect the TerraMaster device to the USB hub.
2. Small File Transfers
- Solution: Copying many small files (e.g., 10KB–100KB) naturally reduces speed. Test with a larger file (10GB+) to assess the true speed.
3. Hard Drive Issues
- Solution: Use a tool like HD Tune to check the health of the hard drives in the DAS and the computer.
4. Non-Original USB Cable
- Solution: Ensure you’re using the original USB cable provided with the device.
5. Faulty USB Interface
- Solution: Confirm that you’re using a USB 3.0/3.1 port instead of a USB 2.0 port. Test with another USB port on the computer.
6. Outdated USB and Motherboard Drivers
- Solution: Update the USB and motherboard drivers on your computer.
7. RAID Synchronization
- Solution: For RAID-enabled models, the hard drives may be synchronizing, which can reduce performance. Wait for the synchronization to complete before testing the speed again.
8. RAID Incompatibility with Older Hard Drives
- Solution: Replace the hard drive with a new one. Alternatively, back up the data, reinstall the old drive, create a new RAID array, and format the drive.
Note: This will erase all data, so ensure you have a backup.
