Better to connect to a 4K monitor with the TD2 or the Mac directly?

I am using a TD2 Thunderbolt 3 for my third feature project in a row right now (brand new hard disks and all). It's funny that it took me two years (and two other films) to discover that the thing has a "display port".
Normally, my monitor - a Dell Ultrasharp 4320Q - used to be connected to my MacBook Pro 16inch late 2019 (the one with the big GPU), via Thunderbolt (no, not USB-C, the Dell is a Thunderbolt 4K monitor).
I tried the connection with the TD2 right now and it works perfectly well via DP.
But.
There almost NO literature or advice about how to do this and what advantage it might bring to connect the TD2 instead of the Mac - or vice-versa. Therefore I thought to create this thread and ask you gurus here. Is there a better way for different scenarios? Does the TD2 come with its own graphics card, or does it simply "put through" the Mac's graphics capabilities?
Your insights and tips for all of us who do video editing and wonder how to professionally use the TD2's DP port will be very much appreciated.
