How to setup with Time Machine so it wakes as needed?

I'll be honest, I'm very close to sticking my F5-422 on eBay!
I just want to set it up as a Time Machine and file store for backing up video files.
As it sounds like a Jumbo Jet when running I have set the fan speed to 'low': viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2682&p=14850#p14850
However, now the thing finally goes to sleep, it never wakes for Time Machine backups!
Is there a way to configure this so it goes to sleep when idle, but when Time Machine starts it actually wakes itself up to take the backup?
