Cannot log in to the MySQL server

I had configured maria db and have few wordpress database.
Recently when I try to login using Phpmy admin , I get error message "Cannot log in to the MySQL server" and details as " mysqli_real_connect(): (HY000/2002): No such file or directory"
I tried reinstalling phpmyadmin to the latest version still same.
I tried uninstalling mariadb , still same error.
Please can some one suggest how to resolve this. I am not an expert in Mysql .., only use this as part of creating wordpress website.
