AFP Failing Occasionally

Hi.
Every now and again my Time Machine backup stops working.
Further investigation reveals that the AFP service of the NAS has stopped and can't be restarted
A reboot is needed to fix the problem.
Where can I look to find an error log for when the problem occurs.
Typically after this I have to erase my Time Machine backup and start again.
