New F2-221 Re-installed Using Disks from previous F2-221 is now read only!

My old F2-221 using 2 x 4tb WD red drives in BTRFS Raid 1 died and I reinstalled the drives in the new server following the instructions for installing a new TOS. The old server was running 4.2.07, the new server installed 4.2.09.

I can log in, I can see all of my data, I can map my PC to the shared folders, I can open and copy from the shares, BUT, I cannot add, change or delete any data from the F2-221 whether I use the TOS File Manage or Samba from my PC.

Also cannot run or install any apps that aren't part of the TOS admin console.

Also, there have been no new entries in the system logs since 2/23/21 which is the last date that the old server was working properly.

Support had me re-install TOS, re-verify the admin privileges, re-verify the share read/write privileges and remount the shares. All have been performed twice with no improvement.

I think that I have one clue what is wrong but I am not Linux knowledgeable so I don't know how to remedy and waiting for further aid from support.

Whenever I would try to change any share privilege a message would pop up too quickly to read so I recorded it and took a screenshot. Apparently, I have a read-only file system. See attached. Any help on restoring proper privileges since the tools accessible to me in TOS don't appear to be able to resolve.

Thanks.

Hi,

Is your hard drive full? It is also possible that the hard disk or RAID fails, and the system changes the file system to read-only.

First, you can try to restart the device.

If it is still read-only, please copy the data to another place for backup, check the hard disk and reinstall the system again.

If it is still read-only, please format the hard disk and check the hard disk after the data is backed up. If there are bad blocks, please repair the bad blocks before reinstalling the system, and then import the data again.

There's over 1.2tb free space and I only add a couple of gb per week.

It's been restarted numerous times.

I have backups on an external Windows formatted drive. Hopefully the data is all useable. It's mostly pdf's, photos and some videos. I've spot checked files which appear ok but there's over 50k files so impossible to know for sure.

I have run the TOS bad block checks on both drives and both are clean. Took almost 8 hours. I can't install 3rd party disk utilities onto the TNAS because the file system is now read only.

This has been done twice since getting the new hardware. Does TOS install onto the drives or is it resident on the motherboard's thumb drive? If TOS is installed onto the disks, it is not resident under the BTRFS file system or the file system is making itself read only after the TOS installs.

If it is still read-only, please format the hard disk and check the hard disk after the data is backed up. If there are bad blocks, please repair the bad blocks before reinstalling the system, and then import the data again.
How can I format the disks? When I install the disks into the server, it automatically installs the OS and mounts the file system. Once the system is in a ready state, I can't do anything. Every command I try to change through the control panel stays unchanged because of the read only state of the BTRFS. (either Operation Failed popup or the Read Only File System popup)

Hi,
You need to use the stata cable to connect the hard drive to the computer, and then use the computer's disk management to delete all the volumes, or put it in a normal hard drive box, then connect to the computer and format it with the computer.
The tool for checking the hard disk should also be installed on the computer.
The S.M.A.R.T tools list in the TOS UI is not powerful enough to determind if your drive is really healthy.
To have a full scan for your drive, you need some professional tools, please refer to viewtopic.php?f=75&t=1125.

What is a stata cable?

and then use the computer's disk management to delete all the volumes,

What computer? A Windows pc?

or put it in a normal hard drive box then connect to the computer?

What is a normal hard drive box? Again, connect to what computer? A Windows pc?

and format it with the computer.

Format how? Ntfs? Exfat? Something else?

Hi,
1. SATA data cable, hard disk and windows pc connection
2. Windows pc 》Disk Management, delete the volume (or format) the connected disk
PS: Please back up your data

Ok thanks.

1. Is there a specific format that a win pc needs to apply in order for the TOS be able to use the disk?

2. My research has shown that snapshot might cause the btrfs to go read only. Is there a command line instruction which I can use to try to turn off snapshot?

3. After turning off snapshot, what would be the correct command line instruction for repairing the btrfs?

I'd rather fix the problem than start over if possible. I've run a Windows Home server for over 20 years without ever having to start over or losing data so there's got to be a fix since my data is still there. Formatting and starting over is only a last resort.

1.After discussion, you can only back up data to other devices, format the disk and reinstall the TOS system.
2.snapshot can be closed by uninstalling it,formating the disk in NTFS format(no specific) or delete the volume

Win10 PC wouldn't recognize the BTRFS drives at all connected through a cable or mounted in an external drive enclosure so I couldn't even format them. Wound up putting the drives back into the F2-221 and rebuilding the RAID1 using EXT4 instead of BTRFS this time. It took 13 hours to build the RAID set on 2 x 4gb WD Reds. No bad blocks, no reallocated sectors. That seemed to take a lot longer than I recall it taking to build the BTRFS set originally.
