I have moved house and where I am staying I have no router or ethernet switch to connect to my TNAS. I know it's a network storage device but is it possible to directly link my mac to my f210-2 via an ethernet cable and if so how?

Hello,
You can directly link your mac to your f2-210 with a network cable. After connection, you can find the device through the TNAS PC and use the new IP for SMB access.
If you need to use iTunes to access multimedia files on TNAS, you need to enable DLNA Media Server when there is a network.
