[Help] D4-320 UASPStor reset and disk IO operation retries

I just got a new D4-320 to back up to, however, my backup software is failing to verify backups and I'm seeing the following in the Windows Event log when they fail. The disk number in the error maps to the drive letter i'm backing up to.

Code: Select all

They are different blocks. They fail at different points during the restore. They fail with different source file systems.
I have seen 4 failures and 0 successes with one 10tb WD drive in slot 1.
I have seen 1 failure and 3 successes with a different 10tb WD drive in slot 1.
I have seen 1 success with a 4tb drive in slot 2 but I've only tried the one backup there.
SMART is clean.
I've tried two different USB C ports on my computer - directly plugged into the motherboard.
I'm using the original cable that came with the unit, though I've ordered other cables to test with, arriving today.

My computer config:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 11 Pro
Version 10.0.26200 Build 26200
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8-Core Processor, 4700 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends International, LLC. 1.A17, 11/15/2024
SMBIOS Version 3.7
Embedded Controller Version 255.255
BIOS Mode UEFI
BaseBoard Manufacturer Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
BaseBoard Product MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI (MS-7E51)
BaseBoard Version 1.0
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "10.0.26100.1"
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 32.0 GB

I ordered other cables to test with but I don't think that's the issue.
I have single drive external enclosure (Pluggable) that's 10+ years old that I was using until recently with these disks and never had these issues.

Has anyone seen this issue or know of a possible solution?

Thanks.

Thank you for providing the detailed information and event logs.

The Event ID 129 (UASPStor) and Event ID 153 messages indicate that Windows experienced an I/O timeout and retried the operation. These events do not necessarily mean that the hard drive itself is defective.

Since the issue appears to occur during sustained data transfer, we would like to first rule out factors related to the power supply and USB connection.

Please try the following tests:

1. Verify the power adapter

Please confirm that the D4-320 is using the original power adapter supplied with the unit.

If a different power adapter is being used, please switch back to the original adapter and test again. Please also make sure that the DC connector is fully inserted into the D4-320.

Using an adapter with an incorrect voltage, insufficient power capacity, or an incompatible replacement adapter can cause instability, particularly when multiple hard drives are operating simultaneously or during sustained data transfers.

2. Try a different USB port on the computer

Please connect the D4-320 directly to a different USB port on the motherboard, without using a USB hub, docking station, extension cable, or adapter.

If your motherboard provides USB ports connected through different controllers, please try another type of port if available.

For high-speed USB storage devices, the stability of the USB port can depend on both signal quality and power delivery, particularly during long periods of sustained I/O.

3. Try a different USB cable

Please try another high-quality USB 3.x USB-C cable, preferably a short cable rated for the required USB speed.

A USB connection can appear to work normally for light file transfers while becoming unstable during prolonged high-speed data transfers.

4. Test the D4-320 on another computer

If possible, please connect the D4-320 to another computer and repeat the same test.

Ideally, use a computer with a different motherboard and USB controller. This will help us determine whether the issue is specific to the current host computer or USB environment.

5. Test with only one hard drive installed

If multiple drives are currently installed in the D4-320, please test with only the affected 10TB drive installed.

This can help us determine whether the issue is related to multiple drives operating simultaneously or to power/load conditions during sustained I/O.

6. Test normal large file transfers

Please try copying a large amount of data, for example 100–500 GB, between the computer and the D4-320 without using the backup software.

If the problem occurs during normal file transfers as well, please check whether Windows generates Event ID 129 or Event ID 153 at the same time.

7. Test the same hard drive with another enclosure or USB adapter

If available, please connect the same 10TB hard drive through another known-good USB enclosure or USB-to-SATA adapter and repeat the test.

This will help us determine whether the behavior follows the hard drive or only occurs when the drive is connected through the D4-320.

8. Check whether the issue is specific to the backup/restore workload

If normal file transfers remain stable but the problem occurs only during backup restore or verification, please let us know the name and version of the backup software and the exact operation that triggers the error.

After these tests, please let us know the results, especially:
  • Whether the D4-320 is using the original power adapter
  • Whether changing the USB port makes a difference
  • Whether changing the USB cable makes a difference
  • Whether the D4-320 works normally on another computer
  • Whether the problem occurs with only one HDD installed
  • Whether large file transfers can reproduce the issue
  • Whether the same HDD works normally through another USB enclosure/adapter
  • Whether Event ID 129 or Event ID 153 appears during these tests
These results will help us determine whether the issue is related to the power supply, host computer's USB connection, USB cable, hard drive, backup workload, or the D4-320 itself.

Thank you for helping us investigate this issue.

Thank you for responding. I have done some of these tests but will do the others and reply back here with full results. It will take a few days.
