I have a brand new F4-425 Pro with the OS running on an Optane SSD. (TOS 7 OOB)

I have four Seagate Ironwolf drives:
8TB, 6TB, 6TB, 6TB

running in RAID-6.

I built the array as Volume2 and copied all my data to it before it finished synchronizing. After reboot the box would not come up unless I pulled the drives.

Putting them back in reported the array as corrupted. I deleted them all and rebuilt the RAID array. This time I let it resync before copying data.

The RAID-6 array was built and synchronized. I rebooted the server. Haven't copied any data. It will not come back up.

I suspect if I pull the drives it will reboot again without issue. This is problematic.

Based on the information currently available, we are unable to determine the exact cause of the issue. Please start the NAS with only the SSD connected. Once the system has fully started, insert the hard drives.

Then, generate a system report and send it to our technical support team at [support(at)terra-master.com]. Once we receive the report, we will analyze the relevant logs and further investigate the issue.

I was able to find a monitor to hook the system up to.

It's unclear how to configure the boot order in the BIOS as this isn't quite the standard BIOS I'm used to.

When I boot it I get an error screen that says:

Based on the information shown on the monitor, the issue appears to be related to corrupted or abnormal boot files.

I figured out how to force the boot order to go to the M.2 and I've had a few reboots with success now. I suspect the issue is related to quick formatting the NAS drives in the RAID array so the system was somehow tricked into thinking TOS was installed on them and preferred them first.

Given that nobody in their right mind would install the OS on a platter drive, it probably makes sense to check the M.2 drives first I would think - But maybe my conclusions are wrong and it was something else. Either way, the issue seems resolved for now.

In TOS, the default boot priority for HDDs is higher than that of the M.2 SSD. During the remote support session, our engineer will further check and repair the boot files on the HDD.

In addition, according to the system report, HDD1 has some bad sectors. We recommend monitoring the drive’s health and considering replacing it to avoid potential data risks.

There are a lot of people using hardware that does not give them the choice. Tos was originally designed with that hardware in mind. Given the cost of memory these days, it might end up that users will actually opt for hdd based operating system installs. You might also say that noone in their right mind would ever install an os without some sort of redundancy or that noone in their right mind would not do backups. There are a lot of crazy people out here. Someone has to plan for that and then pick up the pieces for people who do crazy things.

Implied in this was that there was a choice. I recognize that some people don't have it.

I was specifically describing my use case where the box has an M.2 SSD and platter drives in it. In this use case, which was what I was describing since this is a thread I opened related to my issue, nobody in their right mind would use the SSD for storage and the platter for the OS. Context matters.
