Notice of Discontinuation of VirtualBox Application Maintenance
Posted: 24 Jun 2026, 15:29
Dear TerraMaster Users,
Greetings! We sincerely thank you for your continued trust and support of TerraMaster products.
To provide users with a safer, more efficient, and more stable virtualization experience, and with the maturity of the VMs application and its deep integration with KVM virtualization technology, we hereby officially announce that all maintenance services for the VirtualBox application will be discontinued effective July 1, 2026.
1.Main Reasons for End of Maintenance
1) Limitations of Third-Party Architecture
VirtualBox 7.0.x is a third-party virtualization solution developed by Oracle, based on an earlier application-level virtualization architecture. With the upgrade of the TOS 7 system to the Linux 6.12+ kernel, compatibility issues have emerged in areas such as kernel module support and storage driver adaptation. As a result, some users may experience compatibility issues after system upgrades.
2) Imbalance Between Maintenance Cost and Risk
The upstream maintenance frequency of VirtualBox (Oracle) has decreased, with delayed responses to security vulnerability fixes. As a third-party application, TerraMaster is unable to directly resolve underlying security issues. Continuing maintenance would require substantial resources for compatibility adaptations and could potentially introduce new compatibility problems.
3) Evolution of the Virtualization Solution
The VMs application is built on the KVM kernel virtualization technology and is a natively developed TerraMaster solution deeply integrated with the TOS system. It provides significant improvements in multiple aspects, including:
2.Impact of the Discontinuation
As a third-party application, VirtualBox will no longer receive adaptation or security updates from TerraMaster. This may result in the following risks:
1) Unpatched Security Vulnerabilities
Newly discovered vulnerabilities such as VM escape issues, network stack vulnerabilities, or shared folder permission vulnerabilities will no longer be patched, potentially posing security risks when the device is connected to a network.
2) System Compatibility Issues
With ongoing TOS system updates, VirtualBox may encounter issues such as kernel module compilation failures, virtual machine startup failures, or snapshot malfunctions, without any further fixes available.
3) End of Technical Support
TerraMaster will no longer provide technical support for VirtualBox, including troubleshooting, consultation, or remote assistance.
3. Recommendations and Migration Guidance
To ensure data security and a smooth user experience, we strongly recommend migrating your VirtualBox virtual machines to the VMs as soon as possible.
VMs is TerraMaster’s self-developed virtualization management solution based on the KVM kernel. Compared with VirtualBox, it offers the following advantages:
4. Compatibility Notice: VirtualBox and VMs Conflict
Important: VMs and VirtualBox are not compatible and cannot run simultaneously. If VirtualBox is installed on the system, VMs may fail to start enable.
Please follow the steps below to complete the migration:

5. Future Support and Contact Information
We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support.
TerraMaster always prioritizes data security and user experience. We will continue to deliver more reliable and efficient virtualization solutions through ongoing innovation.

- Resource utilization & performance: Kernel-level virtualization with higher CPU, memory, and I/O efficiency
- User experience: Unified management interface with flexible resource allocation
- Data protection: Enterprise-level snapshots and backup capabilities
2.Impact of the Discontinuation
As a third-party application, VirtualBox will no longer receive adaptation or security updates from TerraMaster. This may result in the following risks:

VMs is TerraMaster’s self-developed virtualization management solution based on the KVM kernel. Compared with VirtualBox, it offers the following advantages:
- Superior Virtualization Architecture: Built on kernel-level (KVM) virtualization rather than application-level virtualization, delivering higher underlying efficiency.
- Tighter System Integration: Deeply integrated into the TOS system instead of running as a standalone solution, offering enhanced compatibility and stability.
- Better Performance: Provides high efficiency and near-native performance, outperforming VirtualBox’s moderate performance level.
- Guaranteed Ongoing Support: Continuously maintained and updated by TerraMaster, whereas VirtualBox has reached end of maintenance.
