Torrent issues on TOS 7 — Transmission 4.0.5 keeps dropping connections and throttling download speed
Posted: 08 Jun 2026, 00:36
Hi everyone,
I am having severe issues with the built-in torrent client on the new TOS 7. My torrent downloads are extremely slow, and connections constantly drop. I have already forwarded the ports everywhere (manually and via UPnP), but it doesn’t help at all. Other devices on the exact same network download at maximum speed, while the NAS completely struggles.
Please note that this does not happen on every single torrent, but it occurs very frequently, especially on active downloads with 10+ seeders.
I checked the "About" window and noticed that the current TOS 7 system package uses an outdated Transmission 4.0.5 build from late 2023.
For those who don't know, early Transmission 4.0.x builds are notorious for being unstable. The developers completely rewrote the codebase back then, introducing several critical bugs that are well-documented on their official repository:
1. Peer and tracker disconnects: After running for a while, the client simply stops requesting new peers from trackers. Only a full restart helps temporarily. This is a known behavior reported by the community here: [Transmission Issue #5357 (No more seeds/peers after running for a while)](https://github.com/transmission/transmi ... ssues/5357). [1]
2. Broken µTP protocol & Performance degradation: Due to bugs in bandwidth management and connection queues, Transmission drops active connections right in the middle of a download and heavily limits transfer speeds on older 4.0.x builds. More details can be found here: Transmission Issue #5261 (Transfer performance remains significantly degraded in 4.0.x). [2]
3. Resource exhaustion: On embedded hardware, this specific version causes high CPU usage and memory issues, making the client choke on heavy network streams when trying to handle multiple connections.
While TOS 7 brings amazing core improvements and kernel-level performance updates, we are still stuck with this raw 2023 app package, which makes it impossible to download anything properly.
Dear developers/admins, could you please update the Transmission package to a fresh stable version in the next TOS 7 update? Alternatively, please provide a working guide on how we can manually update the binary or switch to a stable client like qBittorrent. The current built-in Transmission is practically unusable.
