It is voluntary to be a beta tester. No one forces you to do it.

Due to extensive changes in the beta version, detailed update logs are temporarily unavailable. Upon the release of the official version, update notes will be provided for each subsequent update.

If you want to see examples of TerraMaster update notes, here they are: https://support.terra-master.com/posts/ ... ease_notes

I know that generally dealling with a company is voluntary - thankfully.
Would you care to respond to my question if this is the way you plan/we should expect the final version of TOS6 (ie no way back, all settings lost)?
Thank you!

Yes, even when the final TOS 6 release, the update will reset all system configuration and no way down to TOS 5 unless you change a new USB initboot.

That is disturbing and should have been communicated at the outset.

Fortunately I kept my earlier TOS6 array and I can boot that for now. However, I can no longer instal a version of TOS5 due to the usb alteration. I would quite often re-install TOS5 as the only 'clean' method of installing TOS6 - now this cannot be done {As I found out yesterday, wasting my time thinking I had not cleaned my installation disk correctly and the new TOS6.0.420 installed itself without options!!!!! :x }

:?: Will a usb stick from an older model work to install earlier versions???

OK, so I have not yet tried the 'old usb' to install an older version of TOS but I have some

Fresh Install Observations

I had first attempted to install on a hdd with all partitions deleted. This immediately re-installed TOS6.420 seemingly without pause. (I will accept I may have missed something in my surprise at the speed of progression.)

Did a complete 'wipe/security erase' on the same disk.

Using TNAS-PC to access nas, I found that this allowed certain choices. Read everything carefully and don't make assumptions. One instruction is to 'press the escape button' which DOES NOT (apparently) mean on the keyboard! Try the dialogue button marked 'Esc' {somewhat facile imo}.

An option is provided to load a bootloader image. This can be automatically installed or uploaded. There is even an option to download (From TM). Unfortunately, the bootloader images available for download (Common boot loader image 5.1.48) or others I have available for upload all fail to install once you have irrevocably altered internal USB stick.

The only thing that works is the auto install option so you are then committed to the new version anyway. Once that is installed, you do have an option to choose an installation package. That is a bit of a joke at the moment since there are no installation packages that work. Choosing anything currently available other than auto-install cannot be done.

Auto install is a breeze except when it needs to install the file system it takes you first to the Volume section. imo the first step should always be the Storage Pool section. (If nothing else, that will make the user think about how the file systems are set up.)

Again, I would stress, (this is how it appears to me) that once the new init-boot is on the hdd, the drive(s) needs to be wiped to remove it if you want to start fresh. (And that takes time).

Perhaps Tos 6.0.420 should have been at least Tos6.1 or even Tos7.........

Yes. Once the system is updated to 6.0.420, the USB boot will also be updated, and you will no longer be able to install TOS 5. Please refer to item 16 in the update precautions. Unless you replace it with an earlier USB boot by yourself, you can reinstall TOS 5.

We will release a USB boot burning tool in the near future, which will allow users to easily replace the initboot on the USB.

Item 16 in precautions should maybe be a lot higher up the list and even up amongst the RED items. I didn't see it. ????? And, if i had I probably would not have presumed that an UPDATE would effectively break the system and be irreversible. This is a BETA situation which imo should always be reversible - because sometimes we find things are broken.

I tried an in-place update of my F4-423 NAS but got caught-up in some issues that were probably my fault so I am doing a fresh install.

It is still in progress, but I thought I would inform TM on a reporting fault I noticed.

When the disks are formatted with BTRFS, the "Disks" menu does not identify the Partitions as BTRFS but as a cryptic message "RAID member lacking an independent file system".

This seems to be an error to me but maybe it is normal.

TM is this normal reporting for the "Disks" menu?

See attached screenshots for a better explanation.
