Some more good news. I have several Synology NAS boxes, and they all played nice with the Terra Masters.

I made three transfers from three different Synology boxes, and this was typical:

No Errors

TotalRead = 75,021 MiB
TotalWrite = 75,021 MiB
TotalFiles = 1 (0)
TotalTime = 04:37
TransRate = 283.0 MB/s
FileRate = 0.00 files/s

Result : (ErrFiles : 0 / ErrDirs : 0) at 2026/08/26 08:52:47

Thank you for providing such detailed test results. I will forward the information and test results to our product team so that they can reproduce and further investigate the issue in the lab. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused.

For now, you can temporarily disable Hyper Cache to avoid any impact on your transfer speeds.

Just when I thought I was done...

I now have the F4-423 on TOS-7, all the hard drives are installed.

But there is constant drive activity, for two days now.

I do NOT have Hyper Cache.

That command: pidstat -d 3

only gives me this:

06:58:53 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command

06:58:56 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command

06:58:59 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command
06:59:02 0 2572 170.67 0.00 0.00 0 storagemanager

06:59:02 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command
06:59:05 0 2212 0.00 1.33 0.00 0 jbd2/dm-1-8

06:59:05 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command

06:59:08 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command

06:59:11 0 2212 0.00 1.33 0.00 0 jbd2/dm-1-8

06:59:11 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command
06:59:14 0 2572 170.67 0.00 0.00 0 storagemanager

06:59:14 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command

06:59:17 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command

06:59:20 UID PID kB_rd/s kB_wr/s kB_ccwr/s iodelay Command
06:59:23 0 2572 170.67 0.00 0.00 0 storagemanager

All the hard drives have 'Busyness' at about 8%. The NVMe is not busy.

I have exactly 12 files in the whole thing. I have no apps running at all, I only use the device for storage.

I honestly don't understand why there is so much wrong. All the issues I had starting from scratch just to migrate from TOS-6 to TOS-7, and now this.

This is very frustrating.

I also looked at 'Processes' and it seems that only 'Storage Manager' is busy, which tells me absolutely nothing.

What the heck is going on?

What is the exact version of TOS 7 you are currently running?

In TOS 7.0.1140, we fixed the hard drive sleep function.

You can use the hdparm -Y command to put the hard drive to sleep immediately.

Meanwhile, you can use the following command to check what is waking up the hard drive:

Code: Select all

blktrace -d /dev/sdX -o - | blkparse -i -

Day three of constant hard drive activity.

This is what I have:

Image

This is the result of that second command:
LordP666@TNAS:/# blktrace -d /dev/sdX -o - | blkparse -i -
Invalid path /dev/sdX specified: 2/No such file or directory
LordP666@TNAS:/# blktrace -d /dev/sdX -o - | blkparse -i -
Invalid path /dev/sdX specified: 2/No such file or directory
LordP666@TNAS:/#

And this is the result of the first command:

LordP666@TNAS:/# hdparm -Y

hdparm - get/set hard disk parameters - version v9.60, by Mark Lord.

clue=11
Usage: hdparm [options] [device ...]

EDIT:

I should have been clear that the hard drives did NOT stop.

From the "Usage" tag looks like 'hdparm' needs a list of devices to actually work on
For the 'blktrace' I think the "/dev/sdX" is supposed to be a place holder for actual devices you have on your system (It's not literal :( )

The time lag between my posts and the responses was driving me crazy, so I used DeepSeek to help me reinstall everything.

I am not blaming you guys - it is what it is, but I have been messing with this for close to two weeks and I am tired. Between installing the F6, moving all the files off the F4 and doing the updates - it has been very tiring.

I Factory Reset the device, reinstalled TOS, deleted the Volume, deleted the Storage pool, Wiped all the hard drives, and re-created everything.

The device is now initializing (is that what it's called?) the hard drives, and maybe, if I'm very lucky, the problem will go away.

@Gremlin - yeah, I finally figured that one out too. I am not a command line guy. And most assuredly, not a Linux guy, so it went right over my head.
LOL

EDIT:

Let's not forget the 1001 tests I did to find out that Hyper Cache is caca.

We forgot to note that you need to enter the actual drive letter in the command. If the same issue still occurs after re-initialization, to resolve it more quickly, please go through the link below to troubleshoot with our online support team:

Finally, after more than two weeks of installing TOS-7 and moving files around, I have both the F4 and F6 working right.

The F4 I had to Factory Reset, delete the volume & storage pool, wipe the hard drives, and recreate everything. It took two days for the synchronization, but it finally works.

The hard drives are quiet, and 'Busyness' is at 0%

There must be an easier way.
