I noticed that your TNAS model is from the TOS4 era.
If your partition format is TOS4 (characteristic: system partition is only 2GB), please back up your data to another device.
If your storage has been reformatted into the new partition format (characteristic: 8GB system partition), you can follow the instructions on the first page to upgrade the system. Additionally, you can burn a USB boot specifically for TOS6 and install TOS6 directly according to the instructions:

Encrypted shared folders can be retained if the TOS system is merely updated or reset without formatting.

I upgraded to 5.1.145-00320 some time ago and the system partition is already 8GB in size. Everything is running great. What about the other existing shares and the pool? Will they be recognized automatically after the upgrade to TOS 6, so that I only have to create the users again?
Do I understand it right, that the USB Stick is optional?

You're absolutely right! After upgrading to TOS 6, you will indeed need to recreate user accounts. Rest assured, all data in your existing shared folders and storage pools will be preserved—the system will automatically recognize these contents, and no data will be lost due to the upgrade.
However, to prevent any unexpected issues, please pay close attention to system prompts during the upgrade. If any warnings related to data deletion appear, immediately abort the upgrade and contact technical support. Under normal circumstances, as long as no such prompts appear, your data will remain intact after the upgrade.

Is it possible to update the bios version from 5.12 to BIOS version MAPL0304V17 on my F5-221 so I can update to TOS6 I have been running TOS 6.229 for a while but obviously can't update to 6.530 running the 6.229 version, but keep reading others have done this, and where can I find the bios update?

Hi Tricky.
This is not feasible.
For your F5-221, it is recommended to continue using TOS5.
TNAS with the 5.12 BIOS version has different hardware compared to later TNAS models.
Based on existing feedback records, several customers used a tool to burn MAPL0304V17 onto the motherboard of a TNAS originally equipped with the 5.12 BIOS version. Ultimately, they encountered numerous issues, some even resulting in bricked devices.

Of course!
But is it as simple as using an existing TOS 5 update, and which one? or is there more involved?
