Is there a simple way to "upgrade".. .i.e. will a install of the package overwrite all settings, or can it be done on a working version?

Can be done on the existing version, the settings will be preserved. But is always a good idea to make a backup

Unless I'm totally missing it.. version 7.1.1 is still the only file for download.

I get a 502 Gateway error when I try to open it. What am I doing wrong?
