Re: [Help] Unable to access my F5-422, visible to router

Yes, this may be the answer (the boot system). I managed to get to the TNAS desktop by totally recreating my old setup. I checked the network configuration and it *IS* set to DHCP, not a fixed IP address. I can forward you a screenshot of the page if you want verification. So, I tried swapping back to the new router again, the router can see the TNAS as one of the clients, but the TNAS again is just not accessible. I will try taking the drives out and recreating the boot system per the topic you reference in a day or so, other things must take priority.

You may need to be aware that some routers can be configured to inhibit inter-device traffic. Particularly true of wifi routers with multiple radio channels (ssid). I have Netgear routers where this is the default on one (or more) ssid. Traffic on wifi cannot communicate with wired devices through that router without configuration.

Thanks for the info. As far as my PCs and the TNAS are concerned, I'm all cabled. I can transfer files between my two PCs using Transmission (Linux on both boxes), and also between my phone and my PC, so I don't think there's anything preventing inter-device traffic.

If you have any Windows/Mac TNAS PC, you can try searching for NAS. If your network has WIFI, you can also use the TNAS mobile app on your phone to search for NAS. This might help narrow down the scope of the issue.

Thanks. I have unfortunately been ill, with a spell in hospital, these last few days. I am slowly getting back to doing things again. I will get back to this problem in the next couple of days. At the moment, I can access the NAS by restoring my old configuration, but I am having some problem in logging in to the device. It does not recognise my password (stored in the desktop launcher!) and when I try the 'forgot my password' link, I never receive an e-mail with the code. I have tried every e-mail address I have had since buying the NAS without success.

I have sorted the problem with not receiving the e-mails with the codes. The e-mails did not pass the SPF check at my mailhost. I have disabled that check, and now they arrive OK.

I made a mistake when providing the subject line for this thread. My NAS is not an F5-422 but an F5-221. Hopefully that makes no difference to the advice provided thus far. Sorry for the SNAFU. I should have checked the device.

I dismounted the drives and then power cycled the NAS. It was only giving a single beep so I followed the advice given by one of your colleagues upthread, and tried to reinstall the boot system. I downloaded the ~120 MB file to upgrade to TOS 6, burned the .img to a keydrive using the recommended software (plenty of free space, it was a new 32 GB drive)and rebooted the NAS with the keydrive in place. The NAS powered up and after a while gave three beeps. I left it for more than 15 minutes to make sure the process had completed.

I turned the NAS off, removed the keydrive, and booted the NAS again. This time it gave three beeps, but I am unable to detect the NAS, whether by the desktop application, the phone app, the network map on my router, or using nmap to scan the entire network segment. There is just no trace of the NAS. Do I need to remount the drives again before trying to boot the NAS? If not, then what now?

Thanks,

Brian.

I retried the update. This time, the NAS is visible, and I am being prompted to reload the drives. I will not have time to do this today, but will do so tomorrow (Wednesday, USA East coast time) and report back.

Both F5-422 and F5-221 are models from the TOS4 era, which have little impact on troubleshooting.
As you are trying to use TOS6, we believe it is necessary to confirm whether your F5-221 can support TOS6. This can be determined from the BIOS version or SN code. If possible, please let us know.
If the TOS6 installation process prompts' delete/format ', please stop the operation, otherwise it will lose data on the HDDs.
Hope you recover your health soon.

As far as I knew, the BIOS version was determined via the desktop, which I could not reach. The serial number is A2YS220900432. Believe me, there was no way I tried the TOS6 installation with the drives installed! :) I am now getting the expected three beeps rather than one, and the NAS is asking for the drives, so I'll reinstall them later today. It's not a *total* disaster if I lose the data on the HDDs, as the NAS is my backup device. It would just be a major inconvenience to have to reformat and then copy around 30 TB of data onto the NAS again.

So I put the drives back in, as requested. With the drives reinstalled, neither the phone app nor the desktop program can find the NAS, although my router showed it as having been allocated an IP address, and it pings correctly. There is, however, a LOT of disk activity going on (and no, there was nothing about reformatting the drives displayed!). I will let that die down and then try accessing the NAS again.

UPDATE:

Clearly I'm getting somewhere, but I'm not sure what to do now. I pointed a browser at the address assigned by my router, and clearly I am getting a response because the tab becomes labelled "TOS Installation Wizard", but the screen is otherwise blank. Both the phone app and the desktop program cannot find the NAS, and the NAS does not respond to a ping from the terminal prompt.

Can you give me any ideas as to what I should try next? As I have said upthread, the NAS is my *backup* device, so if I do have to set everything up again, including reformatting the drives, it's a nuisance (an extremely large, many terabytes, copy operation) but it's NOT a disastrous data loss.

Thanks.
