  • Interesting…
Again thank you very much for your input.. :-)
  • I hear what you saying, please do correct me if I am wrong.. However I have read that the RAM is a tied and dedicated TerraMaster product on TOS5.1+ and you can't purchase any other brands, unless you install a different OS ( TNS.. :-) ).
  • TOS5 is locked to their own RAM product, I have no problem with this ( its always good to support a developing project ) but I have noted differences in the RAM clock speeds between their different DDR4 RAM sizes (pictured) on the TM store and in the other most browsed outlet (that most common warehouse seller.. ;-) ).
The max they sell is 16GB so I was toying with buying two DDR 8GB at 2666MHZ or two DDR 16GB, However I don’t know what the clock speed is of the DDR 16G, as listed below.

Maybe i'll ask a question with the online chat team, as at the moment all I can do is reply in the forum, as I can’t post a New Topic to ask that question.. (I do hope that is a “post limitation” is a new member thing?).
  • For example..
  • DDR4 4GB SO-DIMM - 2400MHZ
  • DDR4 8GB SO-DIMM - 2666MHZ
  • DDR4 16GB SO-DIMM - SPEED ??
I used to know what was best but I’m a little rusty and out of touch about things of this nature these days.

Anyway I’ll reply here once I have the speed spec for the 16GB RAM stick to let others know..

It was said that TM had a restriction in OS concerning allowable modules, but it has also been said, more recently, that the restriction was removed. Your best hope is to find someone (individual or company) that has already upgraded their NAS and knows what works outside TM guidelines. Personally I have an older unit, but that is happily running NON-TM memory above the "allowed" limit. (Crucial in my case)

  • Cool.. Thank you.. :)
So I asked the question - and yes you are correct and I was misinformed.. It seems as long as you have TOS5 and above you can use other RAM brands.

As regards what speeds TERRA stores sell RAM at, I became very confused and was given the page to the compatibility list.

It seems all the DDR4 RAM is listed as MHZ3200 clock speed recommendation..
  • So the TM team need to update their pictures in their marketplaces, I’m getting confirmation tomorrow of what they actually sell as opposed to the misleading pictures being used (must be for illustration only).
i'll go and search for some matching topics on this forum..
  • Link below if anyone is interested..
As an expat out in France you always have to triple check the details of what you purchase online, else you receive rubbish and mislabelled products.

The SoC that's used cannot support anything above 2933 MHz. Unless it's lucratively priced, there's no reason to spend extra on anything 3000 MHz or higher for this NAS.

Aim for single rank SODIMMs.

Yes..
  • Noted thank you for the steer, it's so easy to be swept alone by the current..
From the old days, I can't remember how the BUS handles the difference, throttling perhaps - time to hit the architecture and coding books again.
  • Anyway advice heeded.. :)

Defo.. Single rank memory, making use of its stability and lower running temperature's equally sized and balanced in both slots.
  • This is an interesting read for anyone and a noobie like me (Note, do reject all cookies they respect your wishes and then it is a pleasant browse and read).
Things have changed a little over the past 15years while I have been away from it all but surprising not by too much, but that could just be me as I do tend to take a snapshot once in a while.
  • Great insight.. thank you.. ;)

FYI..

NVMe Heatsink fabrication and installation pictures attached for general interest.

With warm weather and hard processing both NVMe never gets up above 41dc.

If you want to build one yourself out of 2mm thick sheet aluminium or thinner checker plate, let me know and I'll post the drawing with measurements.

You will need to source 3 x brass or aluminium MB posts to sandwich the MB and sit the heatsink on top.
