in which case yes NTFS for the USB drive is the best way to go, i ended up doing this but i just chose to re-format the drive on my computer and then re-set up USB Copy to transfer all the data back onto it (5tb drive)

Couldn't you just use Plex for this?

If your mate has a smart tv, just install Plex on your NAS, create a library of movies you want to share, then install plex on his TV and allow him to login to to your plex and you can watch the movies. No copying of files etc.
I am from I but live and work in Saudi, my movies are on NAS drives in UK and I can watch them here, on my SmartTV, on my iPad, phone or MacBook. It works brilliantly and its free (its transcodes movies if necessary due to slow internet (I have 1150Mbps down and 52Mbps up in UK but 1Gbps in Saudi)).

No Smart TV, that's why I was asking the Usb version. But I did format the USB HD's in NTFS and backup is playing back now(it's long, 1,58TB Films, 700GB Series, and 355GB "new Films that I never watched). But soon it will be finished :)
