[Help] Migration and raid restaure

Post by eriio »

Help needed: F2-221 to F2-425 migration with RAID 1

I’m asking for help here because TerraMaster support chat was unable to give me clear instructions for my situation.

I currently have an F2-221 running TOS 5 (it cannot be upgraded to TOS 6 due to its BIOS).

The NAS has 2 drives configured as RAID 1:

- Drive 1: has bad/damaged sectors
- Drive 2: healthy and currently contains the RAID 1 data
- Drive 3: brand-new replacement drive

I have also purchased an F2-425, and I want to move everything to the new NAS while avoiding any data loss.

I’m unsure about the correct order of operations. For example, should I:

Option 1:
Create a new RAID 1 using Drive 2 + Drive 3, and use Drive 1 to install TOS on the new F2-425. But if I do this, how can I then create a direct copy of all the files from Drive 2 to the new RAID?

Option 2:
Use Drive 3 to install TOS on the new F2-425, and then use Drive 2 to recreate the RAID 1 on the new NAS.

Or is there a completely different and safer procedure?

I would really appreciate step-by-step instructions on the correct order of operations.

My main priority is to preserve all the data currently stored on Drive 2 and avoid relying on the drive with bad sectors any more than necessary.

Thank you!

It is recommended to use Hard Drive 3 to install the TOS system on your F2-425 NAS. Select Hard Drive 3 to set up a TRAID array, then insert Hard Drive 2 and copy all data stored on Hard Drive 2 to Hard Drive 3. Since Hard Drive 2 and Hard Drive 1 were previously configured in a RAID 1 array, it cannot be directly added to a new array. After completing the data backup, you can format the drive, then add it to the TRAID array that includes Hard Drive 3.

Perfect! Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. I’ll try to follow this procedure.

One more question: what about the containers I currently have running through Portainer? I have Immich and Home Assistant, and it took me quite some time to configure everything.

Is there a way to migrate the containers/configuration to the new F2-425 instead of setting everything up from scratch?

Especially with Immich: will it recognise all the photos I have already imported, including the albums, metadata, etc., if I migrate it to the new NAS?

Thanks again for your help!

Yes, you can migrate both Immich and Home Assistant without starting from scratch.

For Immich, all your photo albums, facial tags, and metadata are stored in its PostgreSQL database folder, while the media files reside in your upload directory. As long as both folders and your Compose configuration are transferred, Immich will recognize everything seamlessly.

How to Migrate Your Containers:

1. Backup Compose Configurations & Data Folders:
  • Stack Configuration: In Portainer, export or copy your docker-compose.yml (and .env files) for both Immich and Home Assistant.
  • Persistent Data Directories: Locate the host folders mapped to your containers (e.g., Home Assistant /config, Immich upload folder, and Immich PostgreSQL database directory).
2. Transfer Folders to the New NAS:
  • Once you copy data from Drive 2 to Drive 3 on your new F2-425, ensure these Docker persistent folders are placed in your desired directory (e.g., /Volume1/docker/...).
3. Set Up Docker / Portainer on F2-425:
  • Install Docker Engine and Portainer from the App Center on your F2-425.
4. Deploy Stacks with Updated Paths:
  • In Portainer on the new NAS, create new Stacks using your saved docker-compose.yml files.
  • Important: Check the volume binding paths in the compose file to ensure they match the storage volume path on your new F2-425 (e.g., verify /Volume1/... pathing).
5. Deploy & Start:
  • Deploy the containers. Home Assistant and Immich will read the existing database and configuration files, restoring all devices, automations, photos, and albums automatically.
Hope this helps make your migration smooth!
