[Help] file or folder name that exceeds ~145 characters is getting rejected by the NAS

Post by Gremlins »

I am using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to update files on a F6-424 AMX running TOS 7.0.0804.

For a large number of copy attempts, CCC returns the error:

"Open (FullPathAndFileNameHere) failed [63, Name is too long]"

The entire path is 244 characters, generally a path of 254 characters is allowed.

However, the NAS is rejecting *any* path/file or folder name that exceeds ~145 characters, which is well below the usual limit.

CCC Support suggest it is a TerraMaster/configuration issue and this item confirms it:

https://help.terra-master.com/docs/TOS6 ... ers%20long

So it appears that maximum file path is 225 characters unless it is in an encrypted shared folder (mine is) which is limited to 143 characters.

Please consider increasing the limit to 254...

This is an inherent limitation of the eCryptfs encryption mechanism itself; encryption also consumes a certain number of bytes, so there are fewer characters available for plaintext filenames. A note regarding this limitation is also mentioned in the Encrypted Shared Folder Creation Wizard.

I have noted your suggestion, and the project team will discuss it. We will provide updates on this thread as progress is made.
However, even if we eventually introduce a new encryption tool in the future, the limitations of existing encrypted shared folders that have already been created cannot be changed.

Due to the kernel and other factors, we are currently unable to meet your request. I hope a solution will become available in the future.
